AUSTIN — The University of Texas System Board of Regents on Thursday approved UTSA's plan to add a football program.

The plan calls for UTSA to develop an $84 million athletic complex, to add a Football Championship Subdivision football program and to advance all sports teams to a Football Bowl Subdivision conference.

Under the plan, UTSA could kick off at the Alamodome in 2011.

Nobody expects them to be anything like UT or A&M.

I say forget UT and ATM. The comparisons are tempting because those univ are so dominant but there are so many colleges that would be better to model UTSA after wrt a new football program. Think big but be reasonable.

As far as academics are concerned, yeah, no reason NOT to aspire to produce as good a student as UT and A%M, even if the research and trust dollars aren't there.

i believe they're planning the basketball arena for 12,000 -15,000 and the football stadium 40,000 - 50,000 seating capacity to meet fbs standards, specifically conference-usa standards should they be invited to join down the road.

The entire complex is to have a new stadium right off of 1604 & Hausman, seating 45-50,000. We haven't even formally signed a lease with the city of SA yet for the first 2 years in the dome. It's simply a tenative/handshake agreement.

Also a new b-ball arena. We were told that at a minimum the arena has to hold 10-12,000 in order to be up to par with Conference USA standards. Dr. Romo felt it was more cost effective to move forward with a new arena since $15million in upgrades was not going to make the Convo suitable for Conf USA.

Why Conf USA?

Lynn has been doing a lot of behind the scenes talking with them & they really like the potential of UTSA. This is down the road, but our long term goal into the FCS would be the west division of Conference USA once they send us an invite. Obviously this can always change if something better comes along.

Texas State is already in the process of moving to an FBS conference. By the time UTSA even fields a team we'll probably be out of Southland. Kind of funny that UTSA fans think they'll get into an FBS conference any time before the calendar says 2030 considering they'll probably need like the entire student body of UTSA to attend every home game for five or six seasons before FBS conference commissioners will even open their petition letter.

About the only thing they have going for them is that San Antonio is a really shitty town to go to college in and the students will have nothing better to do on Satudays. I mean, I guess it's okay if you go to college to actually learn stuff and earn a degree. But that's probably the least important part about the college experience.

Texas State is already in the process of moving to an FBS conference. By the time UTSA even fields a team we'll probably be out of Southland. Kind of funny that UTSA fans think they'll get into an FBS conference any time before the calendar says 2030 considering they'll probably need like the entire student body of UTSA to attend every home game for five or six seasons before FBS conference commissioners will even open their petition letter.

first off their was a game last night, secondly a prominent member of the ut system writes a letter to the editor of the san antonio express news, and finally, the announcement of football last week was a big deal...

...whether you like or not, there is some significance to san antonio area sports. the story was front page above fold on friday's sports section and mention on the main front page...

I strongly considered Texas State a few years ago, back when I actually thought I'd get back into college. Considering I was going to go into history and teaching (strong programs at Texas State), it was the best affordable choice. Except I couldn't even come up with that money, and probably never will.

besides, if I go for a degree now, it'll be accounting to further my current carreer instead of starting a new one.
