No big surprise, but they did confirm that Bob Davie being our head coach has been discussed, cannot go further into details.

That's way more than we ever got on the RC situation.

We were told immediately that he was only an advisor!

THAT WOULD BE FREAKING CRAZY IF SOMEHOW-SOMEWAY Lynn pulled it off.

They just did their first phone bank for it last night. They are targetting 3500 alumni who either already currently support UTSA athletics or feel that they have a keen interest.

Other than that, it's just starting.

Alright, here's the latest football fix.
Nothing new on the coaching front, but here's some details regarding the facilities.

We've been told that the City of SA has offerred UTSA 5 years of playing in the dome, the city will pay us, YES WE'LL ACTUALLY BE MAKING SOME CASH HERE. The final technicality that's being ironed out, is of course the alcohol revenues. YES THE SAME REVENUE FROM THE ALCOHOL THATS PROHIBITED ON CAMPUS!

I know- i know, this is off campus but this is hypocritical, FREAKING BLOOD MONEY....:greedy:greedy:greedy
No one want's to man up & allow it on campus for fear of someone dying on the way home from a UTSA tailgate, but it'll be fine when we're at the dome and we can then say, "Oh, Johnny was at the UTSA football game, but it wasn't on campus, so we can wash our hands of it":bang:bang

The figure that's being thrown around right now is 50% of alcohol revenues, right down the middle! Cha-Ching!

bleedorange&blue
01-29-2009, 06:52 PM
Where does that leave us with the new stadium off of 1604 & Hausman???

It's still a part of the complete athletic complex, but it just gets pushed further back because apparently the dept thinks that this is to good of a deal to pass up.

I see the whole, we have the city by the balls attitude, they need a tenant for the dome, etc........, but what about the tradition, the unity and student pride formed on campus with a stadium. This stuff is priceless!

I hope we milk this for all that it's worth. Whatever profit we can make, plus corporate sponsorships lying in the weeds along with a name brand coach, and I think we'll be off & running.

The Reckoning

Well that's very generous of the city and I will be there without a doubt if I don't make the team when I try out.

However, I have my doubts about how full the dome will be those first few seasons. We already are struggling to fill the Convo for the premier sport we have here. I really think we need to be building the stadium here ASAP.

Are they going to bus the students in who don't have cars to the game?

I'm 99% positive that VIA would do park and ride service from the 1604 campus to the Dome if their playing there. I don't see why they wouldn't, since they did park and ride for all spurs games, and for the Saints games that were at the dome.

Of course, you're right about how full the dome will be. The upper deck will be closed off and I doubt the bowl will be half-filled the first year or two. Fan base should grow pretty quickly, though.

I, of course, would drive there but I'm sure there are some college freshman that don't even have a car.

I'm sure there's some Juniors/Seniors who would take the Via even if they have a car, since there's alcohol at the Dome and a cheap round trip is nice if you want to get trashed.

Personally, I just hate driving downtown (or anywhere near it), so I'm hoping for park-n-ride from Crossroads.

CubanMustGo
02-02-2009, 05:51 PM
In order for there to be a PnR the UTSA Athetic Department will probably have to fund it, with the hope that enough students will come to make it self-supporting. VIA's not going to do it unless they see there's something in it for them.

By David Flores (http://www.mysanantonio.com/email_us?contentID=39063222) - Express-News
Larry Coker, who guided Miami to the 2001 BCS national championship in his first season as the Hurricanes' head coach, said Wednesday that he has applied for the UTSA football job.
Coker, 60, has been a college football analyst for ESPN since getting fired at Miami in 2006. The Hurricanes were 60-15 and won three Big East titles under Coker. Miami advanced to the BCS title game again in 2002, but lost to Ohio State in double overtime.
Coker said he applied for the UTSA job about 10 days ago and talked with UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey by phone last week.
“That's as far as it's gotten,” Coker said, adding that Hickey did not indicate whether or when Coker might be interviewed.
Hickey and UTSA president Ricardo Romo have said they want to hire a coach by March 1.

Not having a coach doesn't help. I know that Incarnate Word had lined up their coach before signing day last year and they got a few kids as a result. Hard to blame anyone for not signing with a school that doesn't have a coaching staff - who is going to do the recruiting?

I say no way to Holtz. First of all I don't think he would even consider the job and he's way too old for a startup program. The kids he'd be recruiting wouldn't have even been alive during his heyday.

As for Coker, show the kids a BCS national championship ring and you might get a little attention.

None of whom are on the football staff yet because it doesn't exist. "Hi, I'm the UTSA golf coach. Want to play football for a brand new team that doesn't have a coach yet?" Doesn't fly. Also, UTSA's web site (http://www.utsa.edu/today/2008/12/football.cfm) says the steps are:

Launch a $15 million fundraising campaign
Begin search for a head coach
After a head coach is hired, search for assistant coaches and recruit players

This Coker thing will be great if UTSA can come up with what will probably be a pretty serious asking price. I don't think you're going to see anyone with more name recognition apply for that job.

Awwww man, I hope for the day in the next 10 years that we'll have a shot at a True Blue Chip kid like these. I know for sure 4 of these kids are going to be at UT's 1st junior day in a couple of days where they'll be getting their offers & some are expected to commit.

We might catch lightining in a bottle someday, but until we jump to FBS status recruiting blue chippers will be impossible. I say lets lock down the SA city limits and start there with our recruits. Anything else our coach can bring (HOPEFULLY LARRY COKER), will be gravy.

Congrats UTSA on getting Coker as football coach. I only went there one semester in 07 because I had a change in what I wanted to do, but I got to vote on the referendum that passed the sports funding and I've always thought the school has potential to become a good NCAA program :king

It's good to see that they will be starting their football program with an experienced, proven coach who is a winner.

www.utsatailgaters.com is confirming reports from news 4 woai's don harris that former national championship and miami head coach LARRY COKER will be hired as UTSA's first ever football coach. more information on www.utsatailgaters.com story below from www.woai.com

http://www.woai.com/news/local/story/UTSA-To-Hire-Coker-Announcement-Could-Come-Friday/Tguw3z8dPkygYWCsus6gHw.cspx
SAN ANTONIO -- UTSA could have their first head football coach by as early as this Friday. Sources close to the process tell News 4 WOAI's Don Harris that it will be former Miami Coach Larry Coker.

News 4 WOAI has learned that the interview process ended on Tuesday. Coker, Tulsa's Paul Randolph, and Mel Tjeerdsma from Northwest Missouri were all in town for interviews this week.

UTSA Athletic Director Lynn Hickey would not confirm that Coker is the choice saying that a decision on the coach has not been made. She said she will not rush to get a deal done.

However, Hickey added "if things come together quickly an announcement could come as early as Friday."

UTSA would like to do that because it would be ideal to introduce the new coach before students go on spring break.

May have been a little premature on the Coker call:

http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/UTSA_ends_interviews_may_hire_coach_Friday.html

UTSA could name its first football coach as early as Friday or as late as the third week of March, athletic director Lynn Hickey said Tuesday night.

UTSA completed its interviews Tuesday with Northwest Missouri head coach Mel Tjeerdsma, the last of three finalists to meet with Hickey, school president Ricardo Romo and other officials on campus since last week.

Former Miami head coach Larry Coker and Tulsa associate head coach Paul Randolph are the other finalists.

Hickey denied a report on WOAI television that UTSA was preparing to offer Coker the job.

“We have not made a decision,” Hickey said.

Coker, 60, said he hadn’t been offered the job.

“I have a tough time lying, and I’m not going to start lying to you,” he said. “I have not talked to anybody at UTSA today. I would expect to get a call one way or another.”

Hickey said she and her staff will meet with Romo this afternoon to discuss each candidate and review input from people who met the coaches during their interview visits to San Antonio.

“These three coaches talked to a lot of different people when they visited,” Hickey said. “We just want to visit and see what people said, and then determine if there are other questions we might have. We still have a little bit of homework to do, but we’re getting closer.”

Hickey expressed doubts she and her staff would recommend their choice to Romo today.

“We just want to see where we are, and Dr. Romo is going to have to sign off on everything,” she said. “The earliest we could name someone would be Friday, but I don’t know if we’re going to be able to do that.”

Hickey said she wouldn’t want to introduce the new coach next week because UTSA is on spring break. Hickey’s duties as a member of the NCAA men’s basketball selection committee also will take her out of the city for part of next week, leading up to Selection Sunday on March 15.

She won’t return to UTSA until March 17.

“If we don’t hire a coach by Friday, we’ll have to wait until at least March 17,” she said.

They were just talking to Don Harris about on ESPN 1250 The Zone and it's just about interpretation. Lynn could not confirm or deny the reports when Don reached her yesterday, but today she's denying that it's official?

To take Don's words, they better announce by Friday because if it's true the sizzle of the story kind of dies down.

A&M sued the Seahawks. A&M has a trademark on "12th man" and has had since the early 1990's apparently (they first used it in 1922). They came to an agreement for the Seahawks to use it with acknowledging it belongs to A&M back in May of 2006, after the case was moved to Federal courts.

That was fast ... Coker's back:

http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/local_colleges/UTSA_expected_to_hire_Coker.html

Former University of Miami head football coach Larry Coker is expected to become the first coach at UTSA, a source told the Express-News on Wednesday.

A news conference is planned for Friday.

Coker, 60, was one of three finalists for the job and interviewed last week. The two other finalists were Tulsa associate head coach Paul Randolph and Northwest Missouri head coach Mel Tjeerdsma.

Coker led the Hurricanes to the 2001 BCS crown and the BCS title game a year later. He was fired five years after winning it all. Coker was 60-15 in six seasons at Miami.

Coker lives in Fort Myers, Fla., and has been a college football analyst for ESPN the past two seasons. He was a finalist two years ago for the Rice coaching job that went to MacArthur graduate David Bailiff.

The Roadrunners are scheduled to kick off their first season in 2011 as an independent in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly Division I-AA.

AP is reporting and UTSA announces...IT'S OFFICIAL

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3955044
Texas-San Antonio hires Coker
Associated Press
SAN ANTONIO -- Former Miami coach Larry Coker has been hired to lead the new Texas-San Antonio football program, his first coaching job since the Hurricanes fired him in 2006. UTSA announced the decision Thursday. A news conference is scheduled for Friday. Texas-San Antonio plans to play its first season in 2011 in the Football Championship Subdivision. Coker was among three finalists for the job, along with Tulsa assistant Paul Randolph and Northwest Missouri State coach Mel Tjeerdsma. Coker's hiring was first reported by San Antonio television station WOAI. A phone message left at Coker's home in Florida on Thursday was not immediately returned. Coker, who has been working for ESPN as a college football analyst, went 60-15 with the Hurricanes and led them to the 2001 national championship. He was fired in 2006 after a tumultuous season in which the team went 6-6. That season was marred by problems off the field, including an infamous brawl during the Florida International game that resulted in the suspension of 31 players. Coker has talked of returning to coaching since being fired, and his name has been linked to several openings. In a 2007 interview with AP, Coker said it only took "about 30 seconds" before Miami's 2006 brawl with FIU came up during interviews for coaching jobs elsewhere. Coker reached the pinnacle of college football in 2001, guiding Miami to a 12-0 record and a national championship victory over Nebraska in his rookie season as a head coach. Now, the 60-year-old Oklahoma native will pilot a program just getting off the ground. San Antonio is the largest city in the nation without an NFL or Division I-A football team. UTSA has about 28,000 students, and an overwhelming majority approved a referendum in 2007 that served as a major step in establishing a football program. The Roadrunners plan to play in the Alamodome, the 65,000-seat downtown stadium built in 1993 that never attracted an NFL franchise like the city hoped. Coker won the Big East each of his first three seasons at Miami. He started off coaching in the 1970s at an Oklahoma high school before moving on to assistant jobs with Tulsa, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Ohio State.

Anyways, the Paisano is completely independent of UTSA. It's the OFFICIAL-UNOFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF UTSA. They get faculty to review everything that's posted & i'm surprised nobody caught that error.
