Fat Mike’s ‘Cokie the Clown’ set at South By Southwest 2010 was graphic in nature. The stories Mike told and the things he did at Emo’s Annex during SXSW left me shaking afterward. Damian Abraham, lead singer of the band Fucked Up, later described this Cokie set as the most depressing and fucked up thing he had ever seen. This article is going to be very rough in nature and isn’t advisable for the young or the weak of stomach.
sxsw-cokie-the-clown-1 It needs to be mentioned that I do not have an audio record of the event, so all the stories recounted here will be to the best of my memory. Most discerning readers will question the complete accuracy of Mikes stories and accounts. While it would be almost impossible to verify these intimate moments I can say that Mike’s friends and other artists that are close to him told me it was their belief that the stories are 100% true. It’s my understanding that this is the first and last set of its type that will ever be performed.

As one of the last sets on the last night of SXSW, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from Fat Mike. Clowns creep me out so it wasn’t like I was expecting to be in anyway comfortable. Pinpoint Music had press access to the show, and as such, I was actually sitting on the stage, positioned stage right the entire event. Sitting next to me were several of Fat Mike’s friends and artists he had asked to be there.

Fat Mike, in full clown costume complete with over-sized Chuck Taylors, was preceded by a videographer that was rolling footage as they walked past me on the way to the stage. The moment Mike showed up as Cokie the Clown it was immediately evident that this was not going to be a comedic type of set. His face was adorned in makeup akin to a traditional European whiteface clown but his eyes were empty and glazed over – the emptiness was vacuous.

Entering to a raucous cheer and holding a bottle of Patron Anejo, Cokie poured out about 40 shots to a tray of glasses he had waiting. After taking about five for himself he passed the rest to the crowd who reflexively devoured them like Pavlov’s dogs.
sxsw-cokie-the-clown-3 sxsw-cokie-the-clown-4

Cokie played about 5 or 6 songs, including a two or three minute acoustic version of “The Decline” which was amazing, “My Orphan Year”, “Cokie The Clown”, and two brand new songs “Drinking Pee” and “La Pietà,” (which means “pity” in Italian). All that turned out to be an ancillary part of the show however. The series of stories Cokie told started off with an account of how back in the mid -’80s Mike and Eric Melvin had witnessed a girl being forcefully carried down the stairs of a club on her way to being raped. As it goes, they both stood there watching slack jawed as she stared at them helplessly, then she grabbed onto both of them and yelled, “Help me!”. The men told Mike and Eric not to say a word. They did exactly that and went upstairs to watch the Vandals perform.

By the time he started talking about his relationship with his father, all of Mike’s friends who were standing near me had noticeably changed their demeanor. Mike talked about conversations with his father that occurred a bit later in his life, presumably his twenties. His father told Mike that after he was divorced from Mike’s mom, she made him see Mike two times a month. His father admitted that all he ever wanted to do was get laid and party, and had no desire to have him as a child. Later in life, when the wife of Mike’s father called him and told him that his father had passed, she wanted to know if he would attend the funeral. Mike was on tour at this point and canceled a show in Fresno to attend the service. He showed up in the tour van, got out, and said two sentences about how he would have loved to have known his Father. Then Mike went back to the van, and did drugs.

sxsw-cokie-the-clown-11 Jumping ahead in the show a little bit Mike talked about his mother’s passing. By this point Mike’s eyes were blood shot from fighting back tears. Mike’s mother was in the hospital with a terminal diagnosis. As Mike sat by his barely-alive mother on her death bed, he told her stories about women he used to have “fucked up kinky sex” with. He said it brought a small smile to his mothers face; letting him know she was still alive. After a short while his mother got up enough strength to ask Mike to help end her life. Mike felt it was his obligation, as her son, to oblige her final requests. After talking with the nurses Mike was entrusted with what was believed to be a lethal amount of prescription narcotics to administer to his mother (for those who haven’t been there – being entrusted to administer an overdose of pills while the hospital effectively turns a blind eye is pretty commonplace in these situations). As Mike put it, her brain wanted to go but her heart was too strong. The pills didn’t kill her. After telling the rest of his family to exit the room, the nurse gave Mike a lethal dose of insulin to administer to his Mother. Mike injected her with the insulin and then proceeded to gently hold a pillow over his Mothers face until she ceased to breathe. After telling this story Mike played a never-released or played song that he wrote about the event.

sxsw-cokie-the-clown-6 At some point in Mike’s youth he lived in a house with 8 of his friends. One evening while Mike was cooking, one of his housemates emerged from his room with a bloodied face. His friend informed him that he had just fallen while attempting to commit suicide by hanging himself with a bullwhip, which failed because the whip had snapped under his weight. Mike told his friend, “Don’t do that” – he then decided to finish cooking himself some beans. That next day he discovered that his friend had successfully hung himself using a length of TV cable. When Mike and his other friends walked in on this suicide scene they took it upon themselves to pilfer through their deceased buddy’s things and steal what they wanted. Mike said all he took was a vinyl record. The next day Mike stood there and watched as the deceased’s parents were in tears, cleaning their son’s blood from the floor.

Mike ended the show with a story told while mixing a White Russian. Mike was at a concert flirting with a groupie who told him that she didn’t get out much because she had a two year old at home. He asked her if she’d, “ever been milked by a dude”. She then confessed to Mike that it was one of her darkest sexual fantasies to be tied up and milked like a cow. Mike told her to meet him upstairs in ten minutes and he would oblige her. Once upstairs he told her to strip down and proceeded to hog tie her on a table making sure to allow her breasts to hang off the edge over a cup. He then added Vodka and Kahlua, and used the milk to make a White Russian.

As Mike finished his last song, he announced that he had a video that he had prepared especially for this evening. The mood in the building was completely fucked at this point. Upon instruction, his videographer hooked up the same camera he had been recording on the entire time to a 20-something inch TV that was positioned stage left. His camera man rewound through the entire footage to reveal a scene that occurred kitty-corner to the artist entrance of this venue. There, Mike was with his clearly visible naked dick filling a bottle of Patron Anejo, that started about 5/8 full to mask the taste, with piss. Without cutting away, the camera tracked with Mike, in full Cokie the Clown garb, as he corked the bottle, walked into the venue, and served it to the very crowd that now looked on in amazement. As the scene unfolded, some of the crowd cheered but most of us were too disturbed for emotion.

I know, so messed up, and to do that in front of all those people.

I know it's a lot of text, but for those that are debating reading this article, it's much better from the source site which includes pics of the clown costume (no piss pics don't worry :lol)

His stories from his childhood have clearly screwed him up into what he is today. Real sad.

In a nutshell, Fat Mike, lead singer of NOFX has an alter ego called "Cokie the Clown". He came out on stage with 40 shot glasses of alcohol, drank 5, and served the rest to the audience.

He then proceeded to play acoustic versions of his music. He also told very personal stories of his life, which are pretty messed up:

- His mother was dying and asked that he end her life in the hospital, so the nurse gave him pills to give to his mother, but they didn't kill her. So he proceeded to suffocate her with a pillow.

- His dad told him he never wanted him as a kid and that Fat Mike's mother made his father visit him twice a month against his will. When his dad was dying Fat Mike refused to visit him, but he did end up going to his funeral. At the funeral he said 2 sentences (I love my dad, and wish I got to know him) and then went back to his van and did a ton of drugs.

- A groupie came up to him and said it was her fantasy to be milked. So he hogtied and milked her and then used her liquids to make himself a white russian, which he drank.

- A good friend of his when he was a teen killed himself, so Mike and his other friends just rifled through his dead friend's things and stole what they could, while the dead boy's parents were distraught cleaning up their son's blood from the floor.

- Fat Mike and his bandmate were at a club in the mid 80's, and saw a girl being raped downstairs. The rapists were from a gang and told them to get outta there as the rape victim grabbed onto Fat Mike and his friend pleading for help. Mike simply walked up stairs and watched the Vandals perform that night as he claims he didn't want any trouble from the gang.

And finally, at the end of the show, his cameraman shows the audience a video, which has Fat Mike pissing into a bottle. The bottle of piss is then divided amongst the 40 shots of alcohol, 35 of which were served to the audience.

Youtube took down the videos of the performance, which were very emotional, even if for all the wrong reasons. Fat Mike was tearing up throughout.

What a guy.

so just because you haven't heard something, means it sucks?

that makes no sense.

they just wanted to make their money their own way. they even left epitaph records because epitaph was going to align with the RIAA, so you can't call them industry.

they would even label their albums "mtv fuck off" when mtv actually played music.

they're kinda required listening for any kid who picks up a skateboard......but if you think that show sounds "utterly pathetic" then i heard that nickelback and creed are going to tour together with the jonas brothers opening up. that sounds right up your alley.

NOFX is almost never played on the radio. As a matter of fact they once sued a station for playing their music without their consent. I think they've outgrown the "punk" thing as they've softened up to play Conan O'Brien last year, but their popularity used to be all the more impressive since they never went the traditional MTV/Radio mainstream route.

so why would a lady with a 2 year old kid still be lactating?

A woman can lactate until she stops regularly breast-feeding.

It is actually recommended by the World Health Organisation to breast-feed until the child is two AT A MINIMUM. I know some people who have breast fed their child until 4/5.

My son is 2.5 and still has breast milk once a day.

But, to the point of the topic - that guy is messssed up.

Say what? It has nothing do with me being Australian...

http://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/faq/index.htm

How long should a mother breastfeed?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, and thereafter for as long as mother and baby desire. The World Health Organization recommends continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond.

You know in people who havent been mind-washing into thinking that formula is the best thing for their child, its quite normal to breast feed for as long as the child feels it needs to?

Stringer_Bell
03-27-2010, 11:52 PM
maybe in non first world countries

Ya, the WHO usually says that kind of stuff to poor countries without good normal milk from cows or formula. It's part of the UN so you know it's probably a crock of shit.

Breastfeed for as long as the child needs to? lol

I wonder what affect it has on tooth development.

Hey, i'm 90% certain you're just taking the piss, but anyway here goes...
See if you can notice the difference between these two... (if you can be bothered reading it)

Benefits of Breast Milk:
The main benefit of breast milk is a nutritional one. This is because the breast milk contains exactly the right balance of fatty acids, water, lactose, and amino acids that the baby needs. In addition, breast milk contains at least 100 ingredients that cannot be replicated in infant formula. Babies also cannot be allergic to their mother’s milk, only have a reaction to something that the mother eats. By simply eliminating that food from her diet, the baby’s reaction will clear itself up. The breast milk contains all of the nutrients that the baby needs for at least the first six months of its life and it is the most important part of their diet past this, supplying half of their nutrients up to their first birthday and a third up to their second birthday. The colostrum, or the first milk that the baby receives after being born, is a nutritional powerhouse, and is vital for helping to protect the baby against infection.

Breastfeeding is good for the child because it promotes good jaw development. The baby has to work harder to get milk from the breast then they do to get it from a bottle and this exercise strengthens the jaw and encourages the teeth to grow in straight and healthy. Breastfeeding may also help to protect your child against allergies. As an example, eczema is significantly rarer in babies that have been breast fed. Breast feeding has also been shown to reduce the amount of ear infections that the baby gets, and also prevents the infections from recurring. Babies that are breastfed are also much less likely to suffer from diarrhea. As well, breastfed babies have better development of their eyesight, speech, jaw, and oral cavity.
Antibodies that Pass Through Breast Milk

Breastfed babies are healthier as the milk contains antibodies that the mother has produced. Approximately eighty percent of the cells in breast milk contain macrophages, a special type of cell that kills bacteria, fungi and viruses. Because of these macrophages, breastfed babies are protected from illnesses such as pneumonia, bronchitis, the flu and ear infections, to name a few. As the mother also makes antibodies to counter the diseases present in their specific environment, these antibodies are passed through the milk, helping the baby to become more resistant to disease.

Breastfeeding also affects the development of the immune system, both in the short term and in the long term. If the baby is weaned from breast milk too early, they may be more likely to contract immune-related diseases in later life. The immune system in the baby is underdeveloped and because of this, antibodies pass through the breast milk to help protect the child. These antibodies are resistant to digestion and pass through to the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems where they help to fight infectious agents.

How the Child Benefits Later in Life

Breastfeeding is not only advantageous to the child in their first years of life. The benefits of breastfeeding are lifelong. Some of these include:

* fewer dental cavities
* breastfed children are less likely to become obese in their later childhood
* they are less likely to develop juvenile, insulin-dependent diabetes
* lower blood pressure in adulthood
* fewer psychological, behavioral or learning problems
* increased cognitive development
* breastfed children are more mature, assertive and secure within themselves

Benefits of Formula:
- Public feedings tend to be easier. You don't get those
disapproving looks from people while breastfeeding in a public
place. A bottle is easier than breastfeeding in public, less
embarrassing for other people as well as the mother, who has a
lot to worry about, while feeding her baby in a public place.

-Feeding the baby is less time consuming. When bottle feeding
your baby it can take up to 10 to 15 minutes where breastfeeding
can take up to that long but on each side, taking up to twice as
long than bottle feeding, and when a newborn is eating every 2
to 4 hours it can seem like all your doing is breastfeeding your
baby. So if you don't have a lot of time bottle feeding can
help you out.

- Anyone can feed your baby formula, unlike breastfeeding where
the mother is the only one that can feed baby, until baby starts
solids. This can help involve the father of the baby as well,
unlike the breastfeed baby who can only eat from mom unless she
expresses milk. The dad can now share in the responsibility of
feeding baby, this helping mom get more sleep, because they can
trade off feedings. Also a babysitter, grandparent's siblings
whoever can feed baby as well.

-It is easy to see how much baby is eating. When breastfeeding
many moms are concerned that baby is not getting enough to eat.
They can not see the intake, so this is a big concern when it
comes to breastfeeding. The bottle feed baby doesn't have that
problem, the mom can see just how much the little bundle of joy
is eating this easing her worry of her baby eating enough to
grow.

-Bottle feed babies don't need to eat as often, the bottle fed
baby eats once every three to four hours depending on the baby,
opposed to the breastfed baby who needs to eat every 2 hrs. The
milk protein in formula keeps baby full and satisfied longer.

-Bottle fed mothers don't have to watch what they eat, they can
take medicine, or have a few drinks at dinner, and not have to
worry about it harming baby. The breast fed mother cannot, she
can't drink caffeine or drink alcohol or take medicine because
that all goes thought to the baby.

-The bottle fed mom can diet as soon as the baby is born while
the breast fed mother cannot she still needs to eat for two, she
needs to eat more fatty things to ensure her milk keeps coming
in.

problem, the mom can see just how much the little bundle of joy
is eating this easing her worry of her baby eating enough to

-The bottle fed mom can diet as soon as the baby is born while
the breast fed mother cannot she still needs to eat for two, she
needs to eat more fatty things to ensure her milk keeps coming
in.

Australians are funny.

I just finished watching this video and it's pretty messed up how Fat Mike doesn't seem to have any emotional reaction to any of the stories. He seems to have numbed himself pretty well. It's an interesting video to watch. I recommend it.

The piss thing was bullshit. I am on the fence about the some of the stories though. It was pretty entertaining to watch though and I would have loved to have been there.
