......Does anyone actually think it will happen??? I sure hope so. I would get season tickets for sure (alumni here). Hell, with 26K students I have no doubt the school would support the team. The runners could also use the Alamodome.....what else are they gonna do with that barn :jack

Well, not slamming you, just pointing something out, but sheer student numbers aren't going to get you support (at least once the newness wears out).

It took Texas State competing for a SLC championship for the majority of non-normally interested student body to get interested.

Yeah, but what about If UTSA is in a conference with Texas State and TCU, SMU and Houston and schools like that??? I KNOW the crowds would be much larger. :elephant

I am a kines major at UTSA right now, and last semester lynn hickey the AD there talked with us. She told us they are in the process of determining it, they are fixing to do a feasibility test to see if it would work. She said and I quote " If shitty ass el paso can have a D1 team we sure can." She also said we would be in conference USA

Das Texan

well TCU is the Mountain West, why is beyond me.

SMU and Houston are in Conference USA, SMU just joined.

and ya we did get that nice win over TCU only our first victory against a ranked team since the 80s.

Stupid death penalty.

Why dont you just put in Rice and UTEP when it comes to Texas schools?

Its not a new idea, one that was tossed around but never really got a ton of monemtum a couple years back.

Quite frankly, I know that I make more to give my opinions than you do to breathe or push baskets at the Wal-Mart, my man. You could even lop off the decimal point on your sorry paycheck and I would still make more than you do just sitting on the can, quite frankly.

Quite frankly, I get the sense that you know I am right, you have failed to denounce me, and UTSA will never have a football team in Div I. Now, go back to your basket pushing and work for my sponsors on my show...you know the one..."Quite Frankly, with ME".

Just to stir some old rumors.

It's gone on around campus since I first started here in 1998 that there was talk of bringing back to life the Southwest Conference with a bunch of Texas and SW schools.

Do a WhoIs search on the domain "southwestconference.com"

I hate the idea of UTSA moving money from acadmeic purposes (where they are extremely lacking - ask people at USAA how happy they are with UTSA business grads) to pursue a shitty NCAA team that no one will give a rats ass about.

Its bullshit when an institution of not so higher learning wastes public money on this crap. They hike up tuition and fees each semester while cutting back services but they are going to introduce football? Where the fuck are the priorities of UTSA's leadership?

That's interesting. Is Gerald Hill, the "administrative contact", anyone notable around campus?

Sounds like a good story for your student newspaper, especially with the sudden interest in Bobcat football this year.

This attitude is exactly WHY, UTSA will not progress. Believe it or not athletic programs pay for alot of the things you are wanting. Also, football brings a sense of pride to the university and that is where alot of alumni will start contributing to the school and conference.

I graduated from UTSA back in 1994, and I havent given a dime as an alumni to the school. I want to see some pride and a better, bigger university spirit going on before I do. :rolleyes

Move to a better conference, get some football going, and I will support the school full boat. UTSA is too big to be a gottdayum commuter school, which is what you want to keep it.

Eh, I kind of have a problem with that statement.

Our Athletic Dept. gets nearly 50% of our student service fees and many times has been given a "slap on the wrist" (per se) when they need some more money.

There's talk that a vote is coming this semester about getting athletics their own student fee and freeing up the student service fees to other places.

From what I've seen, the university barely broke even after expenses with our three-game trek into the playoffs with all three games at home (and mind you, those were national broadcast games).

We're going to take a more in-depth look into State possibly going D-1A in all sports (which is also a major requirement), getting the attendance up and the university's mistake in overestimating student enrollment and budgeting more than they could for all departments via the student service fees.

Also, something like only the top ten or twenty college football programs are actually profitable (the UT's, Michigan's, Notre Dame's, etc.).

Ok......maybe I wasnt right on that one, but you have to admit.....it would be dayum fun to go watch a game on the weekends!!!!

Very true, and a very little known fact.

That's another reason why the bowl system is so entrenched. Look at what each bowl pays out - and how the money goes to the other teams in the competing teams' conference. UT had to split that $17.5 million they got apiece with all the other teams in the Big 12. Same with SC and the Pac-10. And there's how many bowls now, 30? Obviously they all don't pay what the BCS ones do, but there's still a lot of money changing hands and supporting hind-tit football teams like Vandy, Baylor, and Washington State.

Notre Dame, on the other hand, got to keep all $14-15M the Fiesta Bowl paid them due to being an independent.

They percieve us as poe dunk and they wanna keep us down and don't wanna see san antonio progress so they can still have someone to pick on and so they can say that their city and college is superior to ours. Most people probably have the mentality that "san antonio isn't supposed to have a div. 1 football team or an NFL team". Well, forget all those naysayers!!! We'll show them.
