Man....no telling.....whomever it is, I hope he recruits more around the SA area. I always see guys that played highschool in the area, go off somewhere else and help make the other college teams more successful. JMHO.

Please name these friends and what highschool they went to?

I'm not denying San Antonio has some talented players, but nowhere near the amount of players cities like houston/dallas have.

He didn't say we did. All lebomb said was that he wanted to keep the talent that is here. UTSA could be a top 50 NCAA program but they need some serious facility upgrades. A&M-CC is joining the Southland next year and they already have better facilities for basketball. You are right, they will never be on the level of a team from one of the power conferences but they certainly can be better and being a good mid-major school is an reachable goal.

Ski Jones......Kansas State.
Jack Ingram......Wichita State, friends of mine from John Marshall

Devin Brown......West Campus, UTSA (one of the few recruited locally) NBA

Justin Harbert......Taft, scholarship to Colorado, transfered back to UTSA.

Chris Daniels (not a friend) but went to Sam Houston High.......full scholarship to Texas A&M Corpus (7'-"0) and they killed UTSA twice this season.
Actually TAMCC killed us the last two years with a starting lineup that had two players that graduated from Holmes High. Two years ago there was a guy on the UTPA team that went to Lanier........he was a point guard.....he torched UTSA in two games by hitting 6 to 7 out of 10 three pointers in the two games I saw.

I hope you see a lil of my point. There is talent here, we just let them get away alot of times.

Ok one more thing..........look at Gonzaga.....GONZAGA!!!! I never even heard of that school until about 5-6yrs ago. What friggen hotbed is this university located??? :wtf

That just goes to show you what can be done. I know UTSA is larger than Gonzaga, and is located in a larger city for sure.

Actually Jack Ingram went to Tulsa then transferred to Illinois and was on their team last year that lost in the NCAA title game.

Guys like Jeff Foster (Tx. State), Jay Poerner (SMU), Bo Outlaw (Houston) Shaquille O'Neal (LSU) etc. have played HS ball here. It would be nice for them to have a reason to stay...right now...its almost an afterthought.

Several other guys -- particularly Chris Doyal and another kid from Alamo Heights whose name escapes me now -- have ended up at programs like Princeton.

I'd think UTSA would have a hard time competing with the academic opportunities of some of the east coast schools. And they'd have a hard time competing in terms of exposure even with lower-eschelon teams in bigger conferences. They can make some headway and they can compete with smart recruiting. Ken Bermeister in the mid-to-late 80's did a good job of putting together teams that competed for tournament invitations in the early years of that program, when it was unaffiliated with any conference. It's a matter of finding an industrious coach who can entice kids to come to San Antonio or to stay here.

I think the notion that UTSA could ever be a top-50 type program is a bit far-fetched, but I don't think it's ridiculous to think that the Roadrunners could be a contender for the SLC title every year and, thus, a candidate to be in either the NCAA or NIT field every year. I would agree that the step up to that level will require significant upgrades in facilities -- the Convocation Center isn't a great college gym -- and resources (it would help if UTSA students cared much about their basketball team). The opportunity is there.

Ken Burmeister was the one that told me that in 1999. Being a top 50 program would not be easy and is not guaranteed but also is not out of the realm of possibility.

With 26K plus students on hand.........anything can be done period. UTSA is just a young school compared to almost all D1 schools.....it hasnt been around since the late 1800's or early 1900's. The school is only 30 or so years. I think its made leaps and bounds for a school that young. We will see what happens.....but, Im behind whatever it takes to get things moving.......as a concerned Alumni.

Sounds like to me that the smart hire would be Ronnie Arrow at A&M CC.

20+ game winner the last two years with San Antonio kids as the main contributors. Proven Division I coach. Led South Alabama to the NCAA's twice while at South Alabama. Won numerous JC championships while at San Jacinto, turning their program in to the top JUCO program in the Nation.

I know that A&M CC is joining the Southland next year and many of the coaches feel that they are probably the favorites to win it.

Also, IMHO I think UTSA would be better off hiring a guy that is proven versus hiring a young unproven high major assistant.

Not to mention his ballclubs have dominated us the last few years. He can flat out coach.

Good luck to UTSA in this hiring process.

YES

Ronnie Arrow at A&M Corpus Christi is being talked, and I just found out that Woolridge (K-State), and Melvin Watkins are pushing hard for the job.

All I can say is I hope UTSA hires a proven coach. Not some young high major assistant.

Are any of the guys you mentioned above proven???? I know A&M CC has handed UTSA their asses the last two years. Several of the players on his team are from SA.....including his 7'-0" center from Sam Houston High. UTSA needs to try and keep players like this home.

Thanks for the info.
