Hit the link for the whole thing. Sorry for the format, didn't mess with it.

    Welcome back.
My guest is the general manager of the san antonio spurs.
He's led them to four nba championships.

00:09:13 Nice to have you on, how are you?

    00:09:15 >> I'm great, thanks.

    00:09:17 >> All right.

00:09:20 The lakers are finishing fast.

00:09:23 You're banged up the how concerned with you -- are you?

00:09:26 >> We're more concerned with being healthy and preparing for the playoffs.

00:09:32 Right now we're just concerned about getting healthy and the standings will be what they will be.

00:09:39 When you saw the way tim duncan went down against golden state, what went through your mind?

00:09:46 >> It's never good when tim hits the ground.

00:09:50 He's put us through trauma every time that's happened but he's look good this week.

00:09:57 >> What about the timetable for his return?

00:10:00 >> Hopefully by the end of the week we'll have a better idea.

00:10:04 But he's looking good in his workouts now.

00:10:08 We should have a chance to see where he is tomorrow.

00:10:11 >> Talk about the number one seed.

00:10:13 Is that going to impact how and when you bring him back?

    00:10:17 >> No.

00:10:18 Fortunately we've got eager players and a cautious coach, and I think pop's history is to really work through the best interests of the players and challenge them to really be ready.

00:10:28 >> So will duncan be expected to be at 100% when the postseason starts?

00:10:34 >> You know, that will be -- we'll see how that goes, but i think we anticipate him being able to go through practice, being able to go through games sooner than the postseason.

00:10:47 >> Tony parker was the one who said look, we can still get that number one seed without him, but we're not going to make a deep run into the postseason without him.

00:10:57 How dire would it be if he's not 100%?

00:11:00 >> Well, I think it's obvious that although we've had a very good year to date, the last four games probably -- and we've played pretty well in the last four games, the last four games show the importance of tim to our program.

00:11:15 So if we go into the postseason and tim's not healthy, that doesn't bode well for us, but we anticipate him back sooner than that.

    00:11:25 >> Take a big picture look.

00:11:28 He's a hall of famer we figure and there ant si more unselfish guy.

00:11:35 For you to do the job you have done, how much easier does it make it knowing you've got that guy in that position in >> it'll -- shall position?

00:11:46 >> Well, it's the reason why we are where we are, quite frankly.

00:11:52 Tim is the most important piece, the relationship he's had with the team and with pop, the ability he has to go hard allows pop to -- to build a program that he can coach anybody.

    00:12:07 >> I think you're selling yourself short.

00:12:09 Certainly you're the architect of this thing and have worked in partnership with gregg popovich.

00:12:15 But as someone responsible for the big picture, at some point do you have to think about what is it going to be like without tim duncan, what do we do what -- when he's not here in?

00:12:27 Well, you have to think that way but until it's the time and place, we've got to build to make this team the best we can right now you.

00:12:38 We don't want to put ourselves into a position where we're not competing at the highest level we can with tim, tony, manu, and pop in their state as they are.

    00:12:48 ?

00:12:49 So go to tony for a minute.

00:12:51 What did you think the very first time you saw him of him as a player?

00:12:56 >> You know, I think you never envision you would get what you got now.

00:13:01 All 30 times at the events where tony played -- I think we were jut fortunate that his style fit alongsidemann and tim and he's matured.

00:13:17 A 19-year-old kid coming into our program probably doesn't normally succeed, but I think the maturity level tony had being a pro in france helped him mature.

00:13:31 >> Sounds like you knew when you saw him.

00:13:34 What did pop think the first time he saw him?

    00:13:37 >> He wasn't as convinced.

00:13:39 I think it took some efforts to really listen to what pop was concerned about but by the time we got him in the gym the second time, pop walked out of that workout and basically said at the time, this guy will start for us 10 games into his career but there is no quay he will -- way he will get to us -- >> so what was it like waiting through that whole draft hoping nobody took him?

00:14:08 >> Well, it's always an anxious moment if you are really keyed in on one or two people to see if they get to where you are.

00:14:16 Waiting to the 29th pick took a long time that night.

00:14:19 >> Obviously when you take a core group like that, you've had so much success, realistically how much longer does that window stay open and how much more time do you have with this group in?

00:14:33 I think tim, tony, and manu are under contract for at least two more years.

00:14:40 I think they'll decide amongst themselves when it's time to go another direction but I think if they're all healthy -- pop's done a great job of managing minutes.

00:14:51 Not I -- and I did I -- think -- this year they're all at career low minutes and that's going to prolong their careers.

00:15:00 Pop's really been sensitive to their minutes.

00:15:03 Their relationship together will be the deciding factor.

    00:15:07 >> I appreciate that.

    00:15:10 Excuse me.

00:15:10 I'm so anxious to get to the next question.

00:15:16 I'm so pumped to get this interview.

00:15:18 How did we spoke you -- smoke you out?

00:15:21 >> Well, I always like what you do and it's a real honor to be here.

    00:15:26 >> Thank you,.

    *********************

    Welcome back.

00:18:24 Joining me in "the forum" is my colleague from espn, j.a.

    00:18:25 Adande.

00:18:29 What about the san antonio spurs?

00:18:31 You know, they got out so far in front it looked like it was going to be a boat race.

00:18:37 Any way the lakers nail these guys at the wire and get the number one seed?

    00:18:42 >> It's still possible.

00:18:44 If they beat them and things stay the way they are, the lakers have the tie-breaker.

00:18:50 So san antonio better watch out.

00:18:53 This whole great season could slip away here at the end.

00:18:58 >> Do they need that number one seed to advance?

00:19:01 >> The lakers do not.

00:19:04 The spurs as we've seen in previous years are coming in with manu hurting, tim duncan hurting and they need to be at 100%.

00:19:13 Also the lakers don't have any fear of themmle and that up-tempo style is not conducive to winning games in the playoffs.

00:19:24 One reason not a lot of people jumped on the spurs' bandwagon.

00:19:30 >> And do you see a similarity to where once karl malone and john stockton went, jerry sloan went?

    00:19:40 >> Not at all.

00:19:43 He's been -- not checking with tim, hey, did you get your 401k yet because I'm going to be right there with you?

00:19:52 There are a lot of guys in that gregg popovich mode spread around the league so I think they'll be fine dealing with a replacement but that's not for a couple years.

00:20:04 >> And orlando -- does that win last night change anything at all in >> it shouldn't.

Typical Rome. Ask the same question three or four different ways about Duncan's health.

Ask R.C. wistfully about when Duncan's retired.

Throw in something about Tony so it isn't like a total grilling.

Proclaim Spurs done on another show the same day.

Rome ought to give it up. He has nothing interesting to say (never did).

All he does is repeat himself over and over again on the radio show like he's got Alzheimers.
