Thing is, we don't know who instigated it, who threw the first rock, first punch, swung the first club. For all we know, the leftist protesters could've been defending themselves. The only 100% factual thing we do know is that dip rednecks were invoking Nazism, which is the most reprehensible ideology in human history. When a person flies that flag, they're basically saying to anybody who isn't a part of their idealized master race, "You belong in an oven."

We can't surprised when a person gets punched in that scenario. Like if a guy came up to you and insulted your mother, I'd understand why you knocked him the out. You indeed broke the law, but I wouldn't necessarily denounce your actions. And I lean pacifist, but some words are indeed "fighting words."

Again, it is truly terrifying that there are people who think that commies/Jews have their hands on the levers of power and are resorting to arming themselves with guns and Nazi ideology. I get it, but that's not how our system was set up. The idea behind the marketplace of ideas was that cooler heads would prevail and these people would be outed as idiots and not taken seriously. That's why I think counter-protests are idiotic -- they lend credibility to stupid ideas.

As an aside, I'm pretty sure the Skokie Supreme Court case held that publicly marching with Nazi flags wasn't incitement under the First Amendment.

I absolutely agree that there should have been no counter protest. What these groups want more than anything is conflict and attention, and when a large group of people get together, it's pretty much guaranteed someone will step out of line. Then the group, in this case the alt-right, can use the resulting violence to further energize their base. "See. We were trying to peacefully protest and these violent leftist thugs tried to shut down our first amendment rights with violence! Who's the real fascists here?" It also works as an effective recruitment strategy for the kind of disaffected people who are vulnerable to joining fringe groups like these (your typical bored and angry individual who needs a "cause" to give his life meaning and a group he can belong to. No better way to galvanize that than appealing to race and fear).

What unnerves me is that I think these ideas are starting to be taken seriously. Bannon in the White House seems proof of that. I'm not saying shut them down with violence. I still think it's better to give them no attention at all, but I understand why people are uncomfortable and feel they have to fight it, since they fear passivity will allow the movement to grow.

I also agree the militant contingent of BLM, the Black Panthers, Mexican Separatist groups need to be called out in a similar manner. I think why minority hate groups don't elicit the same kind of unease as white hate groups is because minorities don't have the same economic and political power as whites. The thought might go, "I'm afraid these hate groups will start to be backed by power political and economic white elites, which far outnumber minority elites."
