Vbookie?
As a fellow Spurs fan, I'm going to have to hold you guys to a higher standard than "who wins" in a Summer League.
It will be good to watch to get to see Mahinmi and maybe more importantly Melzer.
I wonder if Melzer has a legit chance of making the roster. I know Melvin Sanders performed better on the stat sheet. But he's still short.
You can't teach shortness.
Mahinmi versus Pavel and Mbenga isn't that fair of a matchup, but it'll be interesting to see how Mahinmi is playing these days.
The one that's on today was Ian's first game as a Summer Leaguer. He didn't fare too well, according to the box score.
I'm sure Melzer was a lock for training camp the second they saw him airball that free throw.
End of First Quarter Thoughts:
Mahinmi - Very active on defense. The Spurs had him at center going against Pavel Pod. On offense, the Spurs didn't run any plays for him. In the hi-lo action, he was often the hi man. Tried to dunk the ball and Mbenga into the basket. Needs to work on not reaching and not going over the back of players.
Melzer - Started off shaky. You can tell he was nervous to start off the review. Has looong arms and a decent frame. His Long Three skills look better than I imagined. He's already a pretty good ballhandler and passer for a converted PF. His jumper has a high release point but looked a little flat.
Sanders - Like always, the best conditioned athlete on the court. Too bad he's not two or three inches taller ... he'd be a perfect Bowen replacement.
Karaulov - Looks a lot better than last year. He's a lot quicker and for a seven-footer, he's actually a good athlete. He's still a long ways off from being an NBA player. Maybe 2 or 3 years from now he could be good enough for a training camp invite. I had given up on him but he looked decent out there.
Someone needs to explain to Ian that "throwdown" doesn't literally mean jump above the rim and throw the ball down at it from five feet away.
Looks like they are trying to convert Jamar Smith to small forward. He doean't really have the range on offense but he seems to be keeping up with Rawle Marshall well enough.
I haven't seen a guy jump as high as Mahinmi since Derrick Dial.
Thats one thing Dial could do, was jump really friggen high.
I like Watson, he looks like a taller thinner version of Speedy.
So...
Who's inviting me over to watch it?
BTW, I don't think Melzer is as bad as all the haters wanted him to look.
Granted its summer league, but he looked pretty darn good.
Gotta love the LONG frame.
I don't think anyone said Melzer looked bad in summer league. He was actually good in summer league and did a good job filling the stat sheet in most games. The people that were hating on him were the Aussies/New Zealanders who had seen him play a lot prior to summer league.
The ways you describe Melzer, is he kind of a cheaper not as good version of Jared Jeffries?
No, Melzer can shoot. He's nothing like Jared Jeffries.
Detective Munch would be a project for sure, maybe less of one than Jamar since he can shoot from the arc -- it's just nice to know the Spurs are at least trying to make a new McKey.
Omar Brown looks like a solid 4 too. Kind of a Haslem looking type.
Melvin's jumper has improved, like TIMVP said, too bad hes just not 2 inchs taller.
Do you mean Andre Brown? If so I agree that he has some talent. He needs to spend the next year in a league where a scout might actually see him play.
Andre yeah sorry.
I like his jumper, he has nice moves in the post, and seems to bang inside pretty nicely.
Id give him a look in training camp no question.
i love canada but... how could they do this to me... Raptors tv - the canadian NBATV - is showing a replay of bennetontrevise against raptors from a few summer ago instead of the spurs summer league game. The only benefit is to see bonner in action.
i count on you guys to tell me how IAN is doing.
Concerning the game i am watching: BONNER has GAME, he is shooting 3s hustling like dog after his favorite ball and throw down some nasty Dunk. The perfect energy guy from the bench. Spending a year with Horry could be the best thing that happened to his career.
PS: the Bargnani kid: he is good too, you feel it watching him, he HAS it
Well, Melzer simgle handedly put this game way at the end. A baseline 15 footer after a Mav runby, than a great block on the other end. Almost got the rebound after the next miss, and when play resumed forced Marshall out of bounds. Finally on the last inbounds of the game put up an alley for Jamar Smith to oop to reward the restless Jazz fans who wanted the game to end.
When Melzer played badly it seemed to be when he had too much time to think.
Melzer might be better than the Aussies thought.
Munch showed some real potential for team play if nothing else.
It'll be interesting to see if the Spurs continue the Jamar Smith SF experiment. He didn't look completely lost, but was definitely more comfortable when playing PF. It'll be the only way he could make the team this season and couldn't hurt his chances for sticking in the NBA a la Noel Felix.
The only guy who showed the kind of dominance you like to see in SL (aside from Melzer's last 2 minutes) was Sanders, and was due in no small part to his outrunning everyone.
