Indeed. I think that his departure has done more to hurt the effectiveness/aesthetics of the offense than any player not named Diaw. Hopefully the increased chemistry that comes from a year of playing together and a player like Hanga can bring some of that back.
Pelton mailbag: Do role players play better at home in playoffs?
Kevin Pelton, 7:58 PM ET [11 June 2017]
"With Adam Hanga likely to sign with the Spurs, how does he project to the NBA?" -- Adam Delatte
Hanga, a Hungarian wing who was drafted No. 59 overall by San Antonio in 2011 -- one pick before Isaiah Thomas -- is a free agent this summer, and EuroHoops.net reported recently that the Spurs plan to bring him to the NBA.
"My plan is to play in the NBA next season," Hanga said in March. "I'm 27, and I think it's the right moment."
Translating Hanga's ACB and EuroLeague statistics to their NBA equivalents shows him rating a little better than replacement level. He projects as a below-average 3-point shooter but a capable passer for a specialist. Hanga's best skill is apparently individual defense. He won the EuroLeague's Best Defender award this season and, intriguingly, former San Antonio wing Bruce Bowen is one of his closest SCHOENE comparisons.
Hanga seems like a useful player to have on the roster and potentially insurance if Jonathon Simmons' market in restricted free agency escalates beyond the point the Spurs are willing to match.
any word on hanga joining for summer league?
If Manu retires or if we loose Green they better bring him over
Not sure he wants to come over anymore. Sounded like the spurs let him dangle for awhile over the summer with promises of him coming, but never materialized.
Money can make it all better. Lol
Let Green walk Hanga defense maybe not as good as Green but his offense is WAY much better then Green.
in a summer where we could lose Green, Anderson, and Ginobili... Hanga would actually be a key acquisition
but i think that ship has sailed, sadly
What could have been, hindsight, etc but man it would have been the perfect offseason for Hanga to join the Spurs, he would have ample playing time...
Pop ain't playing a 1st year guy.
With the depth we needed at SG/SF, Pop would have definitely played him. Hanga wouldn't have been a true 1st year guy.
In the spurs system yes. Much like Splitter had too as well
Recent highlights, recovering from his knee injury
I would take Hanga over Green any and every day. I love a SG who can dribble and take it to the rim and dunk and hit outside shots
Hanga should have been on this year's roster, TBH.
If there were any truth to the rumors that Hanga didn't want to sign here because Manu was still on the roster(not dislike for Manu, just limited minutes available), Hanga really missed out because there would have been a lot of minutes at SG/SF with the whole Kawhi absence.
He is hungarian just like me. He had numerous interviews and articles about how sad he is, stating Pop promised him a contract before last summer, but the Spurs eventually never made him an offer. He was very disappointed and sad that the Spurs didn't want him. He really wanted to come over.
Another RC screw up he should have been brought in.
The Spurs reneged on a contract offer. There was a lot of stuff posted at the time. He waited for days at the hotel to sign his contract and had his physical. He got a better offer in Europe and wasn't going to sign a minimum deal. With Manu returning to play this past season the Spurs apparently didn't feel the pressure to pay him what he's worth. He's waited until the last possible moment to sign his deal in Europe waiting for the Spurs.
