Whatever happened to "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"?

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — City Council members took a step closer on Wednesday to becoming the first in the nation to adopt a resolution condemning certain types of speech on public airwaves.

Councilmember Jan Perry introduced legislation that would call upon media companies to ensure “on-air hosts do not use and promote racist and sexist slurs” on radio and other broadcasts.

They might use the fact that you can't show pornography on basic cable as an analogy. I'm surprised though, I assumed that swearing was already banned from public airwaves by the FCC.

in respect of the sensitivities of advertisers, broadcasters will be encouraged to speak with professional dignity, refraining from gross slurs relating to the race/gender/nationality/religion/language/occupation/sexual preference, of the subjects they cover.

once upon a time TV and Radio did so by adhering to their own professional standards. the standards have degraded somewhat, while at the same time the means of public feedback has exploded, so social disapprobation (i.e., political correctness) plays a relatively larger role now than it once did.

Councilmember Jan Perry introduced legislation this week that would call upon media companies to ensure “on-air hosts do not use and promote racist and sexist slurs” on radio and other broadcasts.

Members of Black Media Alliance, National Hispanic Media Coalition, Korean-American Bar Association, and American Indians in Film and Television were on hand to voice their support for the proposal.

    ...

lol -- lots of diversity on that panel

gagging docs in oilco-owned Repug PA

    Pennsylvania Fracking Law Gags Physicians

A new Pennsylvania law endangers public health by forbidding health care professionals from sharing information they learn about certain chemicals and procedures used in high volume horizontal hydraulic fracturing. The procedure is commonly known as fracking.

The law, an amendment to le 52 (Oil and Gas) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, requires that companies provide to a state-maintained registry the names of chemicals and gases used in fracking. Physicians and others who work with citizen health issues may request specific information, but the company doesn’t have to provide that information if it claims it is a trade secret or proprietary information, nor does it have to reveal how the chemicals and gases used in fracking interact with natural compounds. If a company does release information about what is used, health care professionals are bound by a non-disclosure agreement that not only forbids them from warning the community of water and air pollution that may be caused by fracking, but which also forbids them from telling their own patients what the physician believes may have led to their health problems. A strict interpretation of the law would also forbid general prac ioners and family practice physicians who sign the non-disclosure agreement and learn the contents of the “trade secrets” from notifying a specialist about the chemicals or compounds, thus delaying medical treatment.

not really, it's a symbolic gesture that has no consequences attached to it.
