Consider myself lucky to have taken a class from Linda Schele at UT. A peak college experience.

Not a Civil War buff, and as such this is the first book about the war that I've read. Lives up to the reviews and them some. Outstanding.

Couldn't put it down. An extremely fun read. King's back!

My recreational reading has really taken a nose drive the past few months; I've read a couple of good books on bereavement. I've been trying to help my dad deal with the sudden death of my mom in October----he's had a real hard time. But I was having this same conversation with a friend who is a heavy reader last week, and he said, "Oh man, you need to read something light and trashy next!" So on Saturday I opened up a box of history books he sent, and right on top, with a note that said "Read This First" was:

So I'll let you guys know how it is

that book. it assumes you know too much.

I hate the physics book more, tbh. It pretty much skips 539843048 steps when deriving because it assumes you're just going to do it all in your head or just KNOW. The Calc book is fine, but mainly because I access it as an ebook and it has a bunch of supplemental video walkthroughs. Also, youtube is fairly amazing when you need help with any derivation as someone has put up a video walking you through the steps.

The good thing about the Calc book is that one book has gotten me through everything until DiffEQ.

yeah it's a pretty thick book and lasts a few semesters. i did it the hard way and tried to figure it all out from the book alone. didn't work so hot, especially since my prof was from russia and my TA from china...and i didnt take cal in high school (big mistake).

i do remember my girlfriend knew anything and everything about cal but when it came to physics, she was having nightmares. apparently, one day it just clicked for her though and she started making As instead of bombing every test. that's what i hear from most people taking physics.

I would fail hard as if I tried to teach myself calc from the book. Physics and Calc account for a third of my class load but over 75% of the work load including time spent going to prof office hours/group study etc etc. I can pretty much never show up to a GIS, Env Sci, or Climate class and still make an A but if I miss one Physics/Calc lecture I feel I'm WAY behind. I do have good prof/instructors for each one (although my calc TA is from India he's actually pretty good at explaining things clearly) and I've made sure to stick with them each semester.

I admire people for whom this comes easily because its a lot of work for me to get it sometimes.

biggest problem for me in cal is that everything was explained through regular variables and then it assumes you automatically know how to apply it to trig.

one session my TA said "i know how to do the problem but i dont know how to explain it in english. ill get back to you in a week." only problem was that the homework was due the next day...that was the last time i went to a TA session and i nearly gave up on cal all together.

i was taking other classes i enjoyed more like astronomy, economics and partying, so it was really hard to get pumped up about having to open the cal book and put so much time into it. i figured it out eventually though.

Does anyone have an e-book of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and A World at Arms? Tried downloads but their copies suck.

Seriously though, calc books just suck. That Apostol one I posted above is the only freshman calc book I have ever read and not hated. I hear Spivak's Calc book is good too, but I never have read it (his Calculus on Manifolds text is incredible).
