Childress is playing well in Europe. really well!
and there is a good chance he wins either Euroleague and Greek league this year.
Childress is somewhat a dark horse in this years Free agency. if the teams with significant cap space can't get a premium FA (because they all re sign with their team for example), some of this teams might be willing to trow an impressive offer at him. (5 years/45-50 million?)

if the Hawks re sign JJohnson (for the max), it would put them deep into lux tax, if they match such a number. if Johnson leaves, they might very well be the team, that offers such a contract to Childress.

I love it if the Spurs could sign Childress, but I doubt the Spurs could afford him.

Hawks Will Extend Qualifying Offer To Childress

Hawks general manager Rick Sund says that the team will extend a qualifying offer to Josh Childress.

Childress, a restricted free agent, has played in Greece the last two seasons.

If the forward wants to return to the NBA, he must opt out of his contract with Olympiakos by July 15.

Extending the qualifying offer allows Atlanta to maintain the rights on Childress, giving them the option to perhaps use him in a sign-and-trade.

I agree......I dont see why this guy gets so much love....when he was with the Hawks, he was just an average player at best.

A severely overrated draft pick that really didn't do anything in the NBA and got big money to play in Europe and cannot offer the jump shooting that the spurs need from his position?

    No thanks.

Olympiakos Trying To Get Rid Of Childress

Olympiakos of Greece may be trying to push former Hawks forward Josh Childress out the door, according to redplanet.gr.

Childress has another season on his contract Olympiakos, but he can opt before July 15.

His contract for next season is worth more than four million euros and Olympiakos may be looking for a way to get rid of Childress because of a change of tax laws.

If the Spurs could get him in a trade I'd be up for it but since he is a restricted FA I wouldn't want the Spurs using the MLE on him because we need Splitter

He's got a goofy looking jumpshot but shoots at a decent clip and displays a great feel for the game. Too bad the Spurs have the MLE tabbed for Splitter, because Childress would've been a natural fit at the 3.

Josh Childress Returning to the NBA?
    By Tom Ziller

When Josh Childress, the underrated Hawks forward, signed a surprising deal with Greek powerhouse Olympiakos two years ago, many wondered whether there'd be a new order in professional basketball, with rich European clubs seriously competing with the NBA for good and even great players.

That idea fizzled, partially due a global economic meltdown and partially because Childress' move was less a domino than cir stantial requirement. The Hawks under Billy Knight famously treated restricted free agents like enemies, daring them to sign an offer sheet with another club to set the market instead of working out a fair deal in advance. Josh Smith, who became an RFA simultaneously with Childress, had to draw an offer from the Grizzlies before the Hawks matched. Childress skipped the drama and moved to Greece.

But now he's looking to return to the NBA, according to Greek reports. Childress did flirt with a return last summer, meeting with the Bucks before opting to keep his Olympiakos deal in tact. Childress can opt out of the 2010-11 season of his deal before July 15. That would make him a Hawks RFA once again. That means that while Childress can sign a deal with any NBA team, the Hawks would have the right to match and bring him back to Atlanta.

Atlanta's first priority, of course, is Joe Johnson, an unrestricted free agent come July 1. Hawks management has been vague as to whether the team will push hard to keep the guard, and it seems pretty likely the market for J.J. won't develop until the fates of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are decided.

Again, Childress will have to opt out of his Greek deal by July 15. If he signs a quick offer sheet with an NBA team (which he can do on July 8), the Hawks will have just seven days to decide whether to match or not. It could line up that decisions on Childress and Johnson are under consideration at the same time, with J.J.'s unrestricted status forcing the Hawks to potentially pre-empt outside offers.

The Hawks could also use Childress in a sign-and-trade in order to help shore up the backcourt. Class of 2009 prospect Jeff Teague, used seldomly under Mike Woodson, is expected to become the starter at point guard, pushing veteran Mike Bibby to the bench. Jamal Crawford, 2010's NBA Sixth Man of the Year, could replace Johnson in the starting five, but that leaves the backcourt painfully thin. You'd think Atlanta would want to do better than minimum-contract veterans back there with Bibby off the bench.

Childress is No. 12 on FanHouse's Top 50 NBA Free Agents list.

And the MLE wouldn't have been enough, anyway. Atlanta will match an MLE contract.

Childress is an idiot. He should have come back LAST YEAR, signed the Hawks one year QO, then he'd be an UFA this year in the Great Free Agent Bonanza Summer of 2010.

Why would he return to the NBA? He's making as much as a max NBA contract in Greece! Seriously! Just ask KBP.

Now Childress has found a partner and is negotiation an offer from the Washington Wizards to return to the NBA, according to several outlets in the Greek media (hat tip to the fantastic Sham Sports for finding this one).

No terms of the deal were released, but the guess would be we're talking at least three years and in the $6 million a year range or higher. Atlanta would have the right to match, and if they think Joe Johnson is going to bolt during free agency they likely would...... http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.c...on-wizards.php

Multiple teams waiting for Joe Johnson to finish details on Hawks contract before making offers to RFA Josh Childress. Big market for him.

Spurs cannot afford childress and why would you want another SF who cannot shoot? I would rather have RJ than childress.
