    Well if NBA teams could run 20-man rosters the Spurs could be more patient, I guess.

    Yeah, basically the Spurs don't think it's worth signing young players long term except when they do.

    The problem with this story is that the writer doesn't mention the virtual impossibility of drafting star-potential rookies with draft choices that are at or near the bottom of the draft.

    It's hard to deny the Staff had some inkling of Leonard's potential since they traded up in the draft to get him.

    We will not be able to make much progress through the draft until the collapse of the team after the demise of the Big 3 puts us into the lottery. There is no way we'll be able to net a superstar lottery pick via trades.

    True, and with team scouting catching up to the Spurs' level draft steals like in Tony/Manu aren't gonna happen anymore. It gets to the point where teams like the Knicks draft a foreigner in the second round.
