What does a launcher have to do with rooting?

I've tried different launchers and I always go back to Nova

Buzz launcher is cool if you want to have those complicated and fancy homescreens (you can pick from a lot of cool homescreens made available by Buzz users)

I always thought I needed to root for a launcher? So no? All I do with my phone is call, text, open apps and play games...
