it's because the D has to respect Brady's short gain throws to the sideline. so the RB doesn't have much to stop him from gaining at least a few yards initially up the middle. Defense picks their poison when they play New England

Don't know, depends. What I do know, is that if you put Todd Gurley with the patriots, he gets his ass benched in a week or two because of pass protection, fumble and pass catching issues.
the above is really all that matters out of a back in the Pats' system, tbh. Cover the errant linebacker than tries to shoot the gap, catch short passes in the flats, and don't fumble on the occasion you are handed the ball to keep the enemy D honest.
