Been asked here numerous times. New study came out.

    http://www.scribd.com/doc/276724037/...dy-August-2015

    TL;DR
It is rare for offenders to buy from licensed dealers, and also
rare for them to steal their guns

It's fair to think a different location might generate different results.

"obtain most of their guns from their social network of personal connections." ... where to do the personal connections obtain guns?

    "
Gangs continue to play some role in Chicago in organizing gun buys" ... buy from whom?

    not really helpful.

If almost none is stolen from or lost by legit sellers or owners, then what are sources?

I read the abstract. My takeaway is that if you're buying guns, you should be required by law to keep them safely in your possession at all times and should not be giving them or loaning them to friends and family, since that is the way most criminals obtain their weapons. If you don't, you should be held accountable for the crimes committed with your guns

*Our respondents (adult offenders living in Chicago or nearby) obtain most of their guns from their social network of personal connections. Rarely is the proximate source either direct purchase from a gun store, or theft.

*Only about 60% of guns in the possession of respondents were obtained by purchase or trade. Other common arrangements include sharing guns and holding guns for others.
    "only 60%"

Assuming what comes out of a US gun factory or licensed gun importer is sold legally, at some point a gun is sold, given to disqualified person, aka, Bad Guy.

old data, but it's probably much worse now: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontl...ore/facts.html
