Klay Thompson, for all the HYPE, is in reality just a glorified 3 and D guy.
    Yup.

This trade would be absolutely horrible for us lol. Green is already better than Thompson for our system (his defense >>> Thompson's defense), and Patty is one of the best backup PGs in the league.

No. Just as bad as your Green/Diaw for Shumpert deal last year.
    I missed that. WOW!

Good thing RC and Pop don't take advice from Spurs Talk.

    Trying hard

And I think it's not a bad trade especially considering we have no clue how Patty will look.

LOL, Spurs would take that deal in a second. Golden State would never take that deal.
    No, they wouldn't.

Klay expiring contract is 3mil... Green and Mills= 7.5 mil.

If the Spurs could resign Thompson for 4 yr=30 mil after the trade i would accept it... Otherwise is not worth
Thompson is looking for the max, and there's no way he takes 7.5mil per... he'll end up getting at least 11-12mil because SG is so thin. No way the Spurs would pay Klay 12mil/season.

    Hard No.

RPM, like all single measure stats, is imperfect. It is probably the best single measure we have.

Of the 3 players in that group, Klay is 3rd in RPM. He is the youngest, and his RPM may improve. But he's a 3 and D guy who isn't as good as Danny yet, and Patty Mills is great. He's almost locked in to a max, because points are overpaid for, and the Warriors overvalue him, saying no to Love. Danny Green might get $8m, as his minutes and usage limit per game stats.

Danny Green+ Patty Mills will cost ~12m a year.
Klay will cost ~16m a year.

So Patty and Danny give greater per minute value(by RPM), more minutes per game, and will probably cost less(in total) than Klay.

Considering Mills' injury, it's pretty much Green for Thompson. . .and I'd say no. I like Green's defense and he's an excellent 3pt shooter who doesn't devolve into chucking very often. We don't really need a guy to take a bunch more shots as we need a guy like Green to guards 1's, 2's, and 3's for us.

Thompson would be the better choice over Green for most teams, but not us imo

Absolutely not, with or without Mills. Green is a guy who'll always provide more than he's paid. He'll always be underrated, and underrated = less market value = great value for the team.

Thompson is the opposite. He's an overrated 3 and D guy, and he will ask to get paid. Once you pay a role player like him a lot, it really screws your team.

Keep the money for big guys, or guys who are true game changers. Avoid "star" guards with limited impact on the game. In the long run Thompson is a handicap for any team.

I would only consider this (without taking into account money issues) if it was for one of them plus...idk...Bonner.

Tbh, I don't think RPM is even useful for comparing players playing in different roles on their teams. It overrates the impact that high productivity-low minutes guys have-- especially on defense. We know that it's really rare for a perimeter player to be a #1-2 option on offense, play consistently high level defense, and play over 30 minutes a game. If you sort out the DRPM by SG you'll see that other than Iggy, every other high DRPM defender plays sub 30 minutes a game.

So you can't really tell who the better defender is by only looking at DRPM when guys aren't used in the same way on their teams. Klay Thompson is a bit more than a 3 and D guy on the Warriors.

What is surprising imo is that those stats easily point to Patty being the best backup PG in the NBA. Like very easily.

He's got the highest WAR out of any backup PG and even has a higher WAR than a few starters. (Bledsoe was one of the big names)

I thought this might just point out that San Antonio's backup PG is much better than the replacement (league average player) because of the system, so I looked at the estimated wins added between Neal and Mills.

    '13-'14 Mills: 5.9
    11'-12' Neal: 2.0

Mills' minutes went from 11.3 in 12-13 to 18.9 in 13-14, but his EWA rose from 1 to 5.9. That's ridiculous.

Thompson is a glorified Danny Green
exactly. Thompson's shooting and offensive game is more developed than Green's, but his defense is a pale imitation of Danny's. DG has a history of shutting down SGs and PGs in big moments, which is a recipe for playoff success. Thinking specifically about how he completely changed the dynamic of the spurs-warriors series in 2013. The spurs need elite defense more than elite offense. Klay is a decent defender, but he's not on Danny Green's level in that respect tbh.

I wouldn't trade Klay for Green straight up. Trading Mills and Green for Klay is honestly madness. You'd have to hate the spurs to even propose that trade. In no way does it benefit the spurs.

One of the best two way guards, and elite shooters for an overrated defender sure just trade away the two pieces who've helped you win a championship for the first time in 7 years. Bravo.
