I disagree. A strong, purposeful slap is demoralizing and impossible to recover from. Nothing shows a man you disrespect him more than a refusal to waste a punch on him. I've knocked mother ers out with a hard slap.
A well placed, open hand palm heel can knock someone out easier than a punch. Less painful on the hand too.
It depends on the situation, but if you want to end it with one strike, a closed fist punch is not very effective and can more easily cause injury to your hand and wrist.
A buddy of mine who is a local Judo instructor had some old footage of him doing some underground full contact stuff over in Shreveport. Per the rules, they could only throw open hand strikes. Was a trip to watch...sounded like gunfire when they hit each other.

Hard to do them with MMA style gloves. Plus MMA training encourages boxing. Only a focused martial arts discipline would encourage a palm heel.
