Pious zeal and slaughter isn't peculiar to Islam. There's a family resemblance with Judaism and Christianity. All Abrahamic, all tribal creeds to start with.

Modern day muslims are stoning sexuals and rape victims, beheading people accused of witchcraft, burning people alive, celebrating the death of non-muslims, and bulldozing ancient/historic sites all over the Middle East right now; but I'm sure that's somehow America's/the West's/Christianity's fault.
