I give them (Grizzlies) credit for making the playoffs, but they're about to be swept. Their current starting core, is a laugh.

During the game, the announcers said that by making the playoffs, the Griz got to keep their first round pick this year. Did I misunderstand that? It seems backwards for a protected pick.

If the Grizzlies miss the playoffs this year, and don't then finish in the top five in the lottery, that pick goes to Denver. If they make the playoffs, they keep the pick this year, and likely give it to Denver next year unless the pick is in the top five. Ideally, Memphis makes the playoffs this year, keeps the pick, has a better year next year and gives Denver a pick in the mid-20s.
