Antivirus. The never ending choices and pc / phone compatability

Any specific reason you think one is better then the other?


Some say the anti virus companies make up the viruses to make themselves look heroic in *blocking* the virus they just sent.

Related: your desktop/laptop computers antiV and your smartphones antiV. Should these be the exact same company for compatibility issues?

I just don't download from shady sites and never use IE.

I personally use ESET, got a good deal on it from a reputable seller on eBay.

Kaspersky, Bitdefender and AVG are also good. Some like Avast but it routed all of my internet traffic through it's program, which I found disturbing.

I don't plan on using AV for my phone for a long time.

FWIW, Windows 10 has Windows Defender built in. Which means it will no longer about installing an anti-virus.

Debatable how much better/worse is than other options.

I like Avast, and their VPN is easy to use.

I used Avira for years and it's free. Annoying little pop up that asks you if you want to upgrade, but aside from that it is very solid and uses minimal RAM and CPU. Like BB said Windows 10 has a decent built in system which works fine for me, so a 3rd party antivirus would be overkill. Highly recommend SUPERAntiSpyware (free) and scanning once a month. I've been using that program for like 10 years with great results.

Aviras's personal edition is free, not too invasive, light and does the correctly (but I haven't been using windows in ages, mainly Linux and OSX these days)
