We all know that the San Antonio Spurs have a propensity for drafting European prospects and ultimately making them into high quality contributors in their system. When you look at a player like Juan Hernangomez and what he’s capable of right now, you have to at least halfway connect him to the Spurs. As such, I’m just going to go the whole way at the end of the first round and give him to San Antonio.
Obviously the Spurs don’t have many immediate needs to where they would look at players who can contribute right now (though they might because the Spurs are essentially the NBA’s version of the Illuminati). However, it seems more likely that they go after a player with upside like Hernangomez that they can afford to stash overseas and either have as a movable asset or someone to bring over down the line.

Juan Hernangomez is a very typical player for the San Antonio Spurs to pick here. Hernangomez is a 6’9″ international forward who can shoot from long-range.
He nailed 37.9 percent of his threes with Estudiantes last season, along with averaging 9.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. The Spaniard has some holes in his game on defense, but the Spurs have a way of developing players into being perfect fits for their system.
Hernangomez has a high motor and he’s been very productive in Spain. He’s not a mature player yet, but that’s to be expected of a 20-year-old. San Antonio could use another combo forward to sit behind Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge going forward.
Although the Spurs made a very high percentage of their three-point shots last season, they were 26th in threes attempted per game. Adding a shooter like Hernangomez could help San Antonio add more spacing to their offense next season.

Juan Hernangomez, PF, Spain: The Spurs really like high feel players who can shoot, and Hernangomez fits that about as well as anyone in this draft. He has a smooth, easy stroke, and has been highly successful in the ACB league this season where he won the young player of the year award over future top five pick Luka Doncic and another draft eligible player in Ludde Hakanson.

A combo forward with good size, lateral quickness and decent shooting touch, the 6-foot-9, 220-pounder has already played three seasons of professional ball in the ACB league. San Antonio will need plenty of able-bodied players in a season or two when Hernangomez is ready to take the next step. The Spurs love their draft-and-stash prospects and he fits the bill.

No team canvases the globe the way the Spurs do, and seemingly always come up with a talented player. And with Manu Ginobili likely to play one more season for the Spurs, Hernangomez could stay overseas for one season and then come to the league to help fill what will be a sizable void if Ginobili calls it quits after the 2016-2017 season.
