man this card 480 is just a rebrand, why didnt they just decrease the nano fury x to 200bucks instead...

but at leasts the 480 is probably entry lvl card now, wait till they fix whatever bull and release the vega for enthuasist fanboys...

might as well go use on board graphics, with the way 480 is doing

The Nano is a highly binned 600mm^2 die using HBM1 memory. It's extremely expensive to manufacture for those three reasons and I'm not sure they could make a profit selling it at $400 much less $200.

    Quote from that reddit thread

AMD pulled the same with the R9 295x2, using two 8-pin for a card that drew 500W. It was much more extreme with the 295x2 since each 8-pin is rated for 150W and the PCIE slot for 75W, so that they only recommended you used it with something like 8 different PSUs they had tested that could go so far out of the ATX and PCIE specs. At least with this card you're only talking about 15W out of spec vs the 125W out of spec the R9 295x2 used. But the R9 295x2 was never going to be used with low end hardware like the RX 480 will be, so who knows, maybe this will cause AMD some really major headaches. This is probably AMD being really shady though, they'll release a driver that brings the power consumption down to 150W now after all the reviews have been done at 165W.

AMD is always advertising their DX12 performance, but there is no DX12 game other than Ashes of Singularity that supports multi gpu in any way whatsoever. AMD is done, they need to just get it over with and sell the Radeon Technologies Group to Intel.

What a disgrace. Games with heavy temporal effects (so that the frames are dependent on each other) like Mirrors Edge Catalyst actually perform worse with two gpus than one. This is pathetic, they make a 165W gpu on 14 nm that's roughly even with the 970 so now to challenge the 1070/1080 they'll probably need to make a 300W gpu. AMD just needs to sell off their gpu division to Intel, the company is too poor to put enough money into R&D to compete with Nvidia. At their current performance per watt I can't see any way they'd be able to make something that could challenge a 300W/250W Nvidia GP100/GP102 chip (rumored an, 1080Ti). I mean a 450W gpu? Have fun cooling that , the 250W cards like an X are hard enough already.

AMD going down is not good for consumers, tbh... even the appearance of a semblance of compe ion, both on cpus and gpus, ensures prices are in check.

Frankly, I wish some chinese company like Lenovo bought them out. The Chinese steal IP like crazy, and they would likely put a much better product on both fronts at diluted prices.

Nvidia is already pretty much a monopoly, and the prices reflect that. In the last 5 years we have seen the midrange GXX04 chips go from $250 (GTX 560 Ti) to $500 (GTX 680) to $550 (GTX 980) to $650 (GTX 1080) and the highend chips go from $500 (GTX 580) to $1000 (GTX an / GTX an Black / GTX an X). AMD just keeps failing and failing, I'd love to see Intel jump into the discrete gpu business by buying them out.

I mean , the small die GP106 is about to launch at $300 in the GTX 1060. The 2011 equivalent was the GF116 GTX 550 Ti that was $150. Lower midrange cards for $300 is ing perverse.

I'm just not sure that there won't be an rust issues for such an attempt at buying any portion of AMD... last I heard Intel was actually investing in them, kinda to keep them afloat, so they don't get monopolistic scrutiny. A lot of times the fact that you can just show there's compe ion, even if ty, is enough.

Another potential buyer could be Microsoft, tbh... now they're doing an Apple and building their own hardware, and they could also use it as leverage to gain some $$$ from sony's business.

On the other hand, both of these guys are trying to compete in the low-power, phone/tablet market. NVidia has tried a bunch of times to penetrate there but unsuccessfully so far (their Tegra chips have been really good performers, but cost-wise, they can't compete with the chinese).

The GTX 1060 just launched. It looks to mostly trade blows with the GTX 980 at 1080p.

It's nice that you can actually get them for $250. I saw a PNY GTX 1060 for $250 on Best Buy's website.

For the 1080p gamer like me, do you think the 1070 is worth the $200 more?

I don't know how much $200 means to you, that's really only something you can answer. You'll definitely want at least an i5-6500 or i5-4590 to run either though. The 1060 looks like one of the best 1080p cards in a while for $250. The 1070 is 35% faster on average at 1080p according to the techpowerup.com review, but costs about 70% more (comparing a $430 aftermarket 1070 to a $250 aftermarket 1060).

, considering I'm not planning a monitor upgrade for a while, the 1060 doesn't look half bad at 250..

Personally I run a 970 at 1080p and am very happy with it even in the most difficult to run games like Witcher 3 and Crysis 3 (I may just skip this generation), and the 1060 is about 15% more powerful than the 970. For Witcher 3 I anticipate you'd be able to run 1080p most settings ultra, HBAO+ on, Hairworks off, a few things like render distance at high, and get close to a locked 60 fps (Witcher 3 is really hard to tune for a completely locked 60 fps without turning settings way down or buying a really overkill card). Crysis 3 you'd likely need some mix of high and very high (especially with an i5 instead of i7). GTA V you could max out everything but the advanced settings, MSAA, reflection MSAA, and perhaps grass and you should easily pull a locked 60 fps.

If I had your monitor I'd really be leaning 1070 to play at 100+ fps. But yeah, there is such a huge difference in price between the two cards. There is no such thing as the mythical $380 GTX 1070.

The 1060 doesn't overclock as well as the 980, but it still s all over the 480 for OC considering how much AMD cheaped out on the cooler for the reference card.

The 1060 will definitely age better than the 980 though, especially since it has more vram and can do async compute much better than the 980. I imagine it'll pull away from the 980 over the next few months from driver improvement (same for 1070 over 980 Ti).

AMD being such a piece of the last two years really sucks for consumers, now Nvidia can just go nuts with monopoly pricing. First they put out their midrange GTX 1080 at $700 and now the new an X is $1200? It's not even the big die chip GP100, it's the smaller GP102. And it's not even the full GP102, it's ing cutdown. Which means there will be a $1500 an X Black in a few months with the full GP102 chip. A ing an is now no longer the high end chip anymore and it's $1200.

this is what i dont get with nvidia

they put a $$ premium on monitors that have gsync their technology, quip that with a nvidia card u get extra % performance
now if u dont buy a gsync monitor, u dont see those benefits but only the performance of the nvidia video card...
double dipping into pockets for premium on a gsync monitor and premium on their top end cards cause there is no compe or

i wonder when they do all t hese comparison tests, do they test it on a non gsync/freesync monitor that tells the real performance of t hese cards, or they just test on one monitor which benefits one cards performance over the other...
