because they had the GOAT of GOATs zidane, probably the most impactful player on a stacked team in the history of the game. Sure maradona/ronaldo/pele get you more goals/runs/fans/individual play but zidane got your individual talents to play like a team while still dominating the game. I'd argue that maradona/pele/ronaldo/messi are clearly more important for a less talented squad but peak zidane is the best possible pick for a contending team. And without zidane the same france got cucked by the likes senegal and uruguay and wouldn't even qualify for the 2006 world cup (no joke, they finished with 5 wins and 5 draws, just 2 points ahead of swiss/ israel and 3 ahead of ireland).
