Before whining about media "overcoverage" of the NFC East this year, consider this:

Every year the NFC East is the most televised, publicized, hyped, criticized, complimented, covered team in pro football... but non-NFC East fans all seem to complain about this. But here's why they shouldn't, and why this "over-coverage" is justified:



- The NFC East is the only division in football with FOUR (4) huge market teams, at least 3 of them with huge legacies, in 4 huge market cities/metro areas. No other divisions even come close. Regardless of regular season record, all 4 teams consistently place in the top 5-10 in NFL jersey and merchandise sales, and none of them have fallen under the top half of the league. The Cowboys and Giants, in particular, nearly always place in the top 3-5.


- Let's analyze the rest of the league:


NFC North: One huge market team with decent older legacy; TWO small-to-medium market teams; and one small market team with a unique national fanbase, organizational structure, and a HUGE legacy.


NFC South: One medium-to-large market team with largely apathetic fans; one medium-market team; and TWO small-to-medium market teams. No significant legacies.


NFC West: One huge market team with a huge legacy; one huge market team in a market transition; and TWO medium-market teams.


AFC East: One huge market team with a huge recent legacy; another huge market team; one medium-market team with largely apathetic fans; and one small-market team.


AFC North: One medium market team with decent recent legacy; one small-to-medium market team with a HUGE legacy; another small-to-medium market team without such a legacy; and one small-market team.


AFC South: One medium-to-large market team; one medium-market team; and TWO small-market teams with largely apathetic fans. No significant legacies. (Probably worst division for marketability)


AFC West: One huge market team with a decent older legacy; one huge market team without such a legacy; one medium-market team; and one small-market team.



Therefore, no other division comes CLOSE to the marketability of the mighty NFC BEast. Stay mad, even if the division winner is 9–7 again this year (I think they won't).

The NFC East gets attention because the Giants have won two Super Bowls this millennium and the other three teams have been dysfunctional on and off the field.

If it was all about rivalries and markets, the AFC West would be getting just as much attention every year. Our division features intense rivalries that date back to the pre-merger AFL, as well as the #6, #17, #28 and #32 ranked markets in America. The Chargers are also moving to LA soon, so there's that.
