When CEO Roger Ailes leaves the company, Fox News will have to find a new way forward. But Ailes’ legacy, and a series of business challenges that are on the horizon for the most-watched cable news network, will complicate the endeavor.
In Cleveland, where a small army of Fox News staff is covering the Republican National Convention, the news hit like a tidal wave. With essentially no internal communication, staffers were glued to their smartphones, following the rapidly unfolding story’s twists and turns.
One person said that on Fox News Channel's set in Cleveland Tuesday afternoon, after the Ailes news broke, it "felt like a funeral."
Internally, there are two big questions surrounding the channel’s future. Who’s in charge? And will the channel’s line-up of stars follow Ailes out the door?
As we wrote earlier this month, Bill Shine, who oversees the channel’s prime-time and opinion programming, and Jay Wallace, who oversees news and day side, are seen as likely internal contenders to succeed Ailes as the channel’s top executive, should they want the job. John Moody, Fox News’ executive editor and an executive vice president, is also seen as a strong internal candidate. Another source familiar with Fox's inner workings suggested that Michael Clemente, who took on a new role with the company earlier this year overseeing special projects that may have been a demotion, could profit from Ailes' exit and be best positioned to take the top role, because he has the ear of the Murdoch brothers, James and Lachlan, who are now free to run the channel without Ailes’ interference. A senior TV news executive predicted that neither Shine nor Clemente will succeed Ailes at the company.
Would any of them want to assume the top role given the cir stances of Ailes’s departure, and given their close relationship to him?
Ailes was also notorious for micromanaging, as Rupert Murdoch himself joked about in an interview with Fortune Magazine earlier this year. Wallace, Shine and Clemente are, at any rate, seen as more conventional executives, more willing to delegate responsibility. Indeed, one Fox News staffer predicted that if Ailes were to leave, multiple people would assume the roles he held, even if one person was given the le of chairman or president.
