The officer took four swings that subdued him. Had he stopped there, he'd probably be fine. He then took three or four more in a matter of seconds. You're saying that the other officer should've jumped into the swing zone or something. As it is, he did check him with his hand to stop him thereafter.
And I think prison is extreme. The guy stepped to an officer. You don't do that. Fire the officer for excessive force; but going criminal charges is going nuclear. That's just stupid.

As stated above, once he was on the ground (maybe even a few swings before), that guy was done.
To be fair to the officer, he immediately brandished his night stick in view of the perp, well before any of the violence started. This guy must've been some kinda ed up to take a run at him...either that, or he suffers from a contagious form of palsy that seems to be going around.
The delicious irony is that had the police officer drawn a gun instead of a nightstick the guy probably wouldn't have charged him. Also, was he really homeless, or just drunk/high? He has a T-Mobile shopping bag next to him, not that that means anything, just an observation
