Borrowers In Student Loan Forgiveness Program Shocked To Learn Loans Won’t Be Forgiven

Department of Education’s Public Service Loan Forgiveness program were expecting to see their student loan tab cleared. But that’s not happening for some borrowers after learning they were never actually enrolled in the programs, despite assurances from the companies servicing their debts.

The situation is a culmination of problems within the servicing industry and the complicated forgiveness program.

Turns out that bald eagles and other animals, which haven’t even consulted with the NRA, can be poisoned by fragments of lead ammunition while scavenging animal carcasses.

Eagles can be killed by a lead fragment the size of a grain of rice.

The Wildlife Center seems to think that’s a problem, not merely the understandable price we must pay for Liberty:

“When he asks science advisers to weigh in on matters that will be of national importance — a pressing public health matter, for instance — he could be loading the science advisory boards with people who are sympathetic to his anti-science, politically-driven agency agenda.”

But RNC officials now acknowledge that most of the cash — $34,100 — went toward intelligence-style reports that sought to prove conflicts of interest between Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state and her family’s foundation.

The research—the opposition research—attempted to find some connection between people who had donated to the Clinton Foundation and actions that Hillary Clinton took as secretary of state.

And what did they put together in their effort to bring down Hillary?

The firm produced two dossiers that tried to make the case that Clinton intervened in Bulgaria and Israel, respectively, on behalf of energy companies …

So the RNC directly paid a firm that employed a Russian spy. On the other side, the DNC hired a firm, which employed a British spy.

The “crime” the RNC was out to prove: Hillary Clinton may have helped an Israeli energy firm.

The clock is ticking on children's health program, 31 days after Republicans let it expire

Every single day that passes intensifies the looming crisis for children's health.

States with separate CHIP programs (which enroll about 44 percent of kids with CHIP coverage nationwide) have begun preparing for when they exhaust their federal CHIP funding.

These states are contemplating freezing enrollment, scaling back eligibility, or ending their programs altogether, the Center for Children and Families reports.

States with CHIP-funded Medicaid expansions must continue coverage for their CHIP-eligible children but only at the state’s regular matching rate for federal Medicaid funding, which averages 57 percent across the states, well below the current average CHIP matching rate of 93 percent.)

Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Utah, and Virginia are among states with laws requiring them to close their CHIP programs if no federal funding is available.

And while these states won’t reach that point until December or January, they will soon have to send notices to families about the coming end of their CHIP program.

Even if the President and Congress eventually fund CHIP and these state actions are temporary, they can cause lasting damage to children.

Arizona froze enrollment in its CHIP program in 2009 and enrollment dropped by more than 60 percent in less than two years.

And North Carolina experienced a 30 percent enrollment drop when it implemented a freeze in 2001.

This has never been a controversial thing, making sure kids have health care, in Congress.

It has lately been a political football for Republicans, because that's what they do,

Elizabeth Warren warned Wednesday that the nation’s largest student loan servicer has positioned itself to stealthily strip consumer protections from unwitting borrowers across the country.

she also said the loan servicer, Navient, should not be permitted to be a government contractor handling student loans on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education.

She said the transaction opened up the possibility that the company will try to boost its profits by selling debtors on refinancing their current federal student loans with the company’s own private loans —

“The fear is that Navient will do this because Navient can make money off it, but the difficulty for the people who have been shifted over is that they lose many of the protections that federal law gives to them on federal loans,”

“So long as a student holds a loan that is a federal student loan, there is a public service loan forgiveness loan program available, there are income driven repayment options, there is a borrower defense if the college cheated the student — there are protections put in place.

But those critical federal protections disappear if the loan is refinanced and taken private.

That could matter to many students whose loans, if Navient is successful, are shifted from being federal loans to loans that are held privately.”

As a contractor for the Department of Education, Navient services $300 billion worth of student loans for roughly 12 million Americans.

In recent weeks, the company has been unabashed about the potential upside of moving beyond just servicing loans, and into originating private student loans.

“We will add over $1 billion in new refi loans to our balance sheet this year, and I expect we will add more than $1.5 billion in new loans in 2018,” Navient CEO Jack Remondi told investors last month. “With Earnest, we’ll be a dominant originator of refi loans.”

Warren said the situation presents “a potentially serious conflict of interest: the company could be collecting monthly payments from federal student loan borrowers with one hand, and trying to get some of those same borrowers to trade in their federal loans for Navient/Earnest's private refinanced loans with the other hand.”

the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau filed a lawsuit earlier this year against the company.

The agency asserted that Navient “created obstacles to repayment by providing bad information, processing payments incorrectly, and failing to act when borrowers complained.”

The suit was followed up by separate state suits filed by attorneys general — including one in Pennsylvania, where the company is headquartered.

“They were charging people excessively high interest rates…and they failed to put struggling borrowers into repayment plans that that borrower could afford,”
