Salafists are not new. They were just repressed by the various turkish tribes for 1000 years or so after the Mongols leveled Baghdad and Damascus. If you want to blame anyone then I personally would choose the Brits and Lawrence empowering the Arabs in WW2. All salafism is is the way things were back during the Umayyad era when the Arabs dominated Egypt, Levant, and the fertile crescent.
Muslim imperialism, theocracy, and guerilla tactics have been around since Muhammad taking over Mecca and Medina in the 8th century so blaming anything other than Islam ideology and their lack of a reformation seems to miss the point IMO.

I have no doubts there are some really cool/sweet/nice Muslims. But....what do the stats/numbers tell us about modern day Islam and terroism/violence?

I was born and raised Muslim but walked away many years ago with a smile on my face because it, it's a neanderthal religion (as are all religions). I think Islam needs to get with the times desperately, it's too hyper sensitive and the Koran needs some passages edited out if so many people can take it to the extreme.
