Kobestans couldn't understand the fact that Kobe can somehow missed one playoff at his absolute prime, and yet win b2b FMVPs in his off-peak (and have a 3-peat as the undisputed sidekick) tells you how ridiculously team-dependent he is.
If a player is so ridiculously dominant that he is the undisputed best player on a b2b team, logic has it that said person can at least drag a team, no matter how flawed, into the playoffs when all you have to do is to be AVERAGE in your conference (best 8 out of 15 teams). Kobestans kept blaming Kwame Brown and Sasha as if those are the only players playing alongside Kobe, forgetting that they also have the juice and Lamar Odom, one very solid player and a borderline all-star player in 2005.
However, if a player in his absolute prime would miss the playoffs, and then later win b2b championships, it only goes to tell you how much said player MUST have during the championship years. It's simple, if you need 5 to make the playoffs and at least a 10 to win a championship, and you get a 4 one year, it means that the best player by himself can't be more than a 4, which also means that a lesser version of him must have a supporting cast > 6 to win a championship. While it isn't as straightforward as this, the basic logic applies.
On the other hand, Duncan's teams kept winning 50 games year after year, making the playoffs year after year, and yet never repeated. This speak to the fact that the Spurs were never really dominant in talent to mitigate all the risks along the path to a ring. The only constant the Spurs counted on those years was Duncan. Given that Duncan was consistent year after year, it goes to show that it is the variation of his teammates that contribute to the Spurs ringing or not in a given year. But since the Spurs make the playoffs every single year, and won 5 championships in at least 3 different eras with four very different types of teams, with Duncan being the only constant, it means that Duncan, by himself, can make the Spurs at least a 5 year over year, even in his off-prime years. To put it into perspective, Duncan's off prime is > Kobe's absolute prime, that is how much of a difference is between those two players.

Not the biggest Kobe fan, but when did he miss the playoffs in his prime? They were well on their way for a 7 or 8 seed before he got hurt, which was great because they got Bynum.
