    ‘Election Integrity’ Means Voter Suppression

Among true believers on the right, there is no sturdier fiction — no fairy tale more popular — than the one that insists American elections are plagued by voter fraud. “Election integrity” is the hallmark of GOP activists, and stories that purport to show voter fraud are a staple in the right-wing media-sphere.

as numerous studies have shown, the incidence of voter fraud is infinitesimal.

The truth is that the GOP has long practiced the political art of intimidating voters of color at the ballot box, using tactics both subtle and not-so-subtle.

With Donald J. Trump as president, however, the GOP has abandoned any pretense of subtlety.

Trump has plumped up the myth of voter fraud with outrageous accusations,

    incredible theories and

charges that could not possibly be true.

He claims that he lost the popular vote because of massive voter fraud,

Then there’s his Election Integrity Commission, a panel whose le turns the truth on its head.

Charged with ferreting out the massive voter fraud that Trump invented,

the panel is stacked with hacks who have spent decades trying to suppress the votes of people of color.

The voter fraud commission is itself a fraud.

In 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court gave voter ID laws its imprimatur. 5 oligarchy hacks - 4 judges

The requirement for a state-issued photo ID has the benefit of superficial appeal, though it’s actually a way to block the ballot for poorer voters who lack a driver’s license.

And as Republicans took power in state after state during the tenure of President Barack Obama, more and more GOP-dominated legislatures passed strict voter ID laws.

The GOP Is Plowing Ahead with an Audacious Effort to Hijack the Vote and Rig Elections

From Trump’s “election integrity” commission to Mitch McConnell, the GOP targets the levers of power.

despite ridicule in the press, the GOP's leading proponents of undermining voters and rigging elections were unbowed and forged ahead.

First came Kris Kobach’s willfully incorrect—but headline-grabbing—accusation on Breitbart.com that more than 5,000 people illegally voted last fall in New Hampshire,

Kobach was caught mangling some Republican-produced data about New Hampshire college students who were perfectly legal voters to make his false claim about presumed Democrats voting illegally.

Kobach’s antipathy toward non-natives voting is nothing new.

He has been repeatedly sued in Kansas over adding qualifications to the state voter registration form, including targeting out-of-staters who have moved there.

Now at The Heritge Foundation, von Spakovsky led the second Bush administration’s voter fraud crusade at the Justice Department, and was caught lying about his email lobbying to keep Democrats from being on Trump’s panel.

Trump’s election commission keeps getting clownish grades for its antics.

This week’s New Hampshire field hearing invited only white men to testify, prompting ridicule.

the panel’s real goal: to impede any citizen who doesn’t support the GOP from voting, even as fellow panel members publicly chastised them for it.

In recent years, John Lott has made more of a name as a firearms fanatic than as a voting rights crusader.

But he testified that anyone registering to vote should undergo the same background checks as are needed to get a firearms permit.

they are playing a very serious game, burrowing into the fine print and corners of the voting process to find and exploit ways to rig the rules.

Yet another example this week showed that the GOP is willing to rewrite the rules when it comes to the democratic process, if that’s what it takes for them to win.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he wants to end a process where home-state senators must approve any federal judicial nominee in their state. Blue state senators have been opposing Trump’s nomination of right-wingers to lifetime appointments.

McConnell blocked President Obama’s final U.S. Supreme Court nomination, and stalled Senate action on federal appeals and district court seats—hoping a Republican victory last November would result in a federal judiciary turning toward the right for decades.

Currently, there are 144 federal court vacancies.

In this case, McConnell is trying to press the Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman, Iowa’s Charles Grassley, to end the so-called “blue slip” practice, where home state senators can veto nominations. Yet again,

the GOP is willing to put party before country to win and exercise power.

Here Comes the Next Big Right-Wing Attack on Our Voting Systems

Right-wingers are using bad data and shoddy methodology to push localities to purge infrequent voters.

    Public Interest Legal Foundation

“There’s no rhyme or reason to the 248 jurisdictions that have been identified” by the Public Interest Legal Foundation(PILF),

said Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

“They include communities both large and small.

They include communities with substantial numbers of African-American and Latino and other minority voters.

But what we do observe is there has been a renewed focus on purge programs as a tool for suppressing the rights of voters.”

    J. Christian Adams, a former Justice Department Voting Section attorney who joined the DOJ in 2005 to help implement the Bush administration’s national crusade against

    so-called voter impersonation fraud—a
thoroughly debunked partisan crusade to disenfranchise blue voters.

The Trump campaign in 2016 and his administration have revived this discredited narrative as a ruse for red-run states to impose additional barriers to likely Democratic voters.

That partisan playbook includes purging legally registered voters, especially those who tend to vote only in presidential years.

PILF’s threats fit a pattern established by GOP vote suppressors to intentionally use dubious statistics and legal threats to remove otherwise legal voters,

Top state election regulators in states likeFlorida, Georgia, Ohio, North Carolinaand Kansas, all of whom are Republicans, have deliberately used shoddy data, or intentionally sloppy data mining producing false positives, to claim that their states’ voter rolls are overflowing with ineligible or illegal voters, and then removed thousands of perfectly legal voters.

The Public Interest Legal Foundation follows this same script.

The problem with PILF’s claim is that the Census data it cites, gathered once a decade, does not track the latest yearly demographic changes, such as people moving,

PILF uses this dubious methodology to accuse local officials of mismanaging voter lists—which are in a constant state of flux because people register, move and die—and thus bully local officials into purging otherwise legal voters.

“This action by PILF is a clear attempt to incite and bully election officials to ins ute voter purge programs in their respective jurisdiction,”

some local election officials had been successfully bullied by PILF. Some who opted to avoid a legal fight had entered into settlements with PILF. In those agreements, the right-wingers required the localities to use other problematic federal databases to screen and purge voter lists,

PILF—led by J. Christian Adams—has been targeting electoral districts in swing states.

“They have more recently targeted larger jurisdictions, such as Wake County, North Carolina; Broward County, Florida; and Alexandria, Virginia,”

Robert Reich: Jim Crow Is Making a Furious Comeback

The former secretary of labor warns hundreds of thousands are being disenfranchised.

in Alabama more than 100,000 people who owe money –

    roughly 3 percent of the state’s voting-age population –

have been struck from voting rolls.

This is uncons utional. In 1964, the 24th amendment abolished the poll tax, a Jim Crow tactic used to bar poor blacks from voting.

These new laws are a modern reincarnation of that uncons utional system, disproportionately disenfranchising people of color.

Kris Kobach Outed As A White Supremacist By Leaked Trump Vetting Docs

Leaked Trump vetting do ents list white supremacy as one of the red flags for Trump’s adviser on voter suppression Kris Kobach.

“One heading in the do ent about Kris Kobach,

in the running for Homeland Security Secretary,

listed “white supremacy” as a vulnerability.

It cited accusations from past political opponents that he had ties to white supremacist groups.”

Driver's License Suppression in the hole Confederacy, run by bags

Georgia imposes new form of literacy test to keep Puerto Ricans from getting GA driver licenses

"Name that meat-filled plantain fritter" is
    A) a question from a Food Network quiz;
    B) a question asked of Puerto Ricans applying for a Georgia driver's license;
    C) a way for Georgia to harass and disenfranchise the 72,000 Puerto Ricans who live there

Georgia continues its racist attempts to disenfranchise minorities. This time, they’re targeting Puerto Ricans specifically.

The lead plaintiff is Kenneth Caban Gonzalez, who says he moved from Puerto Rico to Hinesville, Georgia, two years ago seeking a better life.

After meeting a 30-day residency requirement, Gonzalez submitted an application for a Georgia driver’s license on Oct. 31, 2017, but his request was never approved even though he handed over all necessary do entation, according to the complaint.

Though he was later able to receive a state identification card, Gonzalez claims

the agency never returned his old driver’s license,
    his original birth certificate or
    his Social Security card, and
never explained why he was ineligible for a driver’s license.

The lawsuit says the department retained the driver’s license, birth certificate and Social Security card and told him he would be notified when he could pick them up. A few days later, he received a text from the department asking him to come to the Savannah office for an interview.

When he arrived, he was arrested on allegations that he had provided false do ents.

He was later charged in Liberty County Superior Court with one count of first-degree forgery and another of making false statements.

    Those charges are still pending.

[…] The lawsuit says the department has not explained why it believes Caban Gonzalez’s original do ents are false.

Nor has it explained why it provided an ID card but not a driver’s license.

According to the suit, the Georgia agency retains do entation from Puerto Rico-born driver’s license applicants to have them “flagged for fraud review.”

Federal law doesn’t prevent states from erecting barriers to specific populations obtaining state-level government services.

If Georgia wants to make Puerto Ricans and only Puerto Ricans pass a test about their knowledge of Puerto Rican foodstuffs and wildlife just to get a driver’s license, they can.

the lawsuit alleges that the agency’s practices fail to comply with cons utionally protected equal protection provisions because

it treats Puerto Rico-born American citizens differently than those born in the U.S. mainland,

by “not giving them a chance for a fair hearing” if their driver’s license application is denied and

making them undergo additional tests “to answer questions about Puerto Rico in order to prove that they are Puerto Rican.”

    https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/7/2/1869120/-Georgia-imposes-new-form-of-literacy-test-to-keep-Puerto-Ricans-from-getting-GA-driver-licenses?detail=emaildkre

Sounds like Georgia crackers hate PRs as much as Trash does.

The Supreme Court will not review a ruling that concluded a Kansas voting law crafted by former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach was uncons utional and violated the National Voter Registration Act, commonly referred to as the “motor-voter law.”

“Tens of thousands of Kansas voters were illegally denied the most fundamental right in our democracy because of this law.

The Supreme Court’s decision not to review the case will

finally close this chapter on Kris Kobach’s sorry legacy of voter suppression.”
