The "education" for these illiterate assholes is a joke. Personally, I think there should be no athletic scholarships, so the whole thing's a joke to me in the first place.
The coaching business is about relationships and connections, as it is in many career fields. He was an honor student who got his degree in sports management. He certainly wasn't a great basketball player. So he's getting an internship or residency, so to speak, and probably at fairly low pay in the operations side. Yeah, being the son of a coach and personal friend is the reason he's with the Spurs, but this kind of thing goes on frequently - not just with the Spurs. Self is now a student at Pop and RC University.
The guy is a sure fire Hall of Famer as long as he gets that shot over and over again in games. I mean, the guy has it down pat.
Might not be a bad idea to be friends with a coach that has a lot of stroke with some current NBA players as well as bringing more into the college pipeline at Kansas. And if he is a candidate for the coaching job after Pop, here is a pretty good resume.

Funny how hiring Self's kid to a low-paying admin job to get his foot in the door is considered "white privilege" by Pop and RC but when they hired Becky Hammon they were the coolest and most progressive front office in the history of pro sports. Caleb Canales - he's been an nba assistant coach over 10 years despite never playing basketball in college OR high school. Started with the Mavs in a very similar role as Self's son.
BJ Bickerstaff - nba assistant and one time head coach. He never played college ball either. Son of NBA coaching legend Bernie Bickerstaff.
It's all about timing and who you or your family knows.
