Duncan was extremely careful through the years. He never made a mistake until she wanted out...then he made one error after another in quick succession that culminated in compounding his misery. It was amazing in the circa, yes, but, even more so as we get a look at it at distance. He built his life painstakingly one brick at a time, making sure each block was secure.
