I give him credit for very little. The $3 trillion stimulus package in 2009 didn't even take us out of the recession. We weren't fully out of the recession until well into his second term. The economy stagnated from 2009-2012 deep in the ditch due to in part the loss of the Bush era corporate tax cuts and heavy first-term-Obama-era oppressive regulations against the private sector. Don't act like it ain't true.

Housing market collapsed (had been teetering since about 2003), subprime lenders got exposed for ponzi mortgage schemes, some suit and tie guys went to prison, adjustable loans ballooned, homeowners had no choice but to foreclose leading to a period of deflation, rock-bottom prices and poor job prospects. Terrible. But it was the big wigs on wall street etc, not Bush that caused it.
