Amazon's Alexa Eavesdropped and Shared the Conversation

A Portland family contacted Amazon to investigate after they say a private conversation in their home was recorded by Amazon's Alexa -- the voice-controlled smart speaker -- and that the recorded audio was sent to the phone of a random person in Seattle, who was in the family’s contact list.

Mine is a nice conversation pieces.
    Guest: "Hey...what is that?"
    Me: "an Amazon Alexa"
    Guest: "Cool...let me try...Alexa.."
    Me: "it's not plugged in"

I just never got around to messing with it much. I'm not sure why, but I hate using voice commands.

That being said, it's got tons of cool it can do. Order stuff, make phone calls, control you security and/or Nest gadget.
I think they've now got it integrated with the Fire TV so I'm assuming you can tell it to go to a certain show or movie.

Maybe I'll get around to playing with it again but for now, I think I can do all the the same things with my phone.

The echo is a decent bluetooth speaker in a good corner. I usually tell it to pull up stuff from my Spotify account. That's about all I use it for.

They're the gayest thing I know about you so it seemed the obvious response to your technology is gay comment.
Alexa isn't for me but I can see people getting some use out of it.

"Alexa, how can I remove calf tats?"

or you could ask her how to fix your mom's AIDS.

I'm all in on the Alexa ecosystem. Smart switches, outlets, thermostat, Dots around the house, a Show in the kitchen. Love automating the lights and throwing music to my stereo from the Show or a Dot. I'm kinda nerdish bout this stuff tbh.

I'm convinced smartphones spy on you anyway. Maybe it's just coincidence, but there have been plenty of times I've had adds pop up about products that I was having conversations about but never did any internet searches on.

They get to spy on you regardless of what device you own if they target you.

But I say, dont make it any easier by getting like this.

what's your actual definition of "angry" blake? seriously, i'd love to know how you actually define the word "angry". as far as i can tell, you have no clue what the real definition is thus far.

I have a lot of Echos. Like them quite a bit, especially with multi-room music and smart-home integration. My guess in this case is that Alexa thought it heard whatever call word that device was programmed to respond to and then the name of person. Likely, it prompted them that it was calling, but they ignored it. It called that person's phone and the "audio files" are actually voice mails.

I could be wrong in those assumptions, and something weird or nefarious could be going on. It's sort of foolish for those people to not know how it works, though. Alexa is ALWAYS listening, always recording. Otherwise, it wouldn't know when you called it. Theoretically, it's supposed to delete what it records, only keeping a small buffer, and something may have gone wrong or been changed there.
