Tesla CEO Elon Musk blasts media, pitches site to rate journalists: 'No one believes you'

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, ripped the news media for what he described as irresponsible reporting and suggested he would launch a website to assess the legitimacy of individual journalists and news organizations.

Musk on Wednesday unleashed a barrage of criticism aimed at reporters, saying they are "sanctimonious," have "earned this mistrust" and are kowtowing to the business interests of their publications.

It wasn't immediately clear whether any specific news report triggered the rant, which totaled at least 19 tweets.

His Twitter tirade came as Tesla faces scrutiny for multiple crashes over the potential failure of the company's partially self-driving system, known as Autopilot. He complained that traditional auto companies don't get enough scrutiny for the dangers of their vehicles, which he says are worse.

Musk is also facing intense pressure to improve the financial performance of Tesla, which is straining to accelerate production of its new Model 3 electric car. Many publications, including USA TODAY, have reported extensively on the company's manufacturing problems.

In addition, the Model 3 failed Monday to win the recommendation of Consumer Reports, which said the vehicle has "big flaws," including poor brakes.

"Going to create a site where the public can rate the core truth of any article & track the credibility score over time of each journalist, editor & publication," Musk said on Twitter. "Thinking of calling it Pravda …"

Pravda, which is Russian for truth, was also the name of the official government Communist Party newspaper in the Soviet Union.

A Tesla spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

Musk swiftly dismissed suggestions that he's veering into territory occupied by President Trump, who has similarly blasted the news media for reporting he dislikes.

More: Tesla shares fall despite better-than-expected earnings loss

"Thought you’d say that," he said in response to one reporter who made the comparison. "Anytime anyone criticizes the media, the media shrieks 'You’re just like Trump!' Why do you think he got elected in the first place? Because no ones believes you anymore. You lost your credibility a long time ago."

In another tweet, Musk lambasted "the holier-than-thou hypocrisy of big media companies who lay claim to the truth, but publish only enough to sugarcoat the lie," saying this "is why the public no longer respects them."

Musk also accused journalists of pursuing "max clicks" because they're under "constant pressure" to "earn advertising or get fired."

Problem is journos are under constant pressure to get max clicks & earn advertising dollars or get fired. Tricky situation, as Tesla doesn’t advertise, but fossil fuel companies & gas/diesel car companies are among world’s biggest advertisers.

    — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 23, 2018
News companies are under significant financial pressure amid the rise of digital ad giants Facebook and Google. But most traditional news companies draw a sharp line between their journalism and their advertising, ensuring that business interests don't influence content decisions.

model 3 just got dinged for slow braking and a too-complex touch screen to do simple stuff

model also suffered from "fit and finish" problems a while back, and production problems, but Tesla's "working on it", 400K Model 3's on order

I think Musk has stretched himself too thin, tunneling, rocketing, cars, solar

this attack on journalists and his snubbing/hanging up on financial journalists a couple weeks ago, maybe he's cracking.

Brings his pet ing snail on stage?

Proves my point how great a self-marketer Elon Musk is. He's got this ing idiot NOT calling him "Big __________ Corporate Fat Cat/ (insert stupid bouton's nickname here)" and that's exactly what he is.

"I think Musk has stretched himself too thin, tunneling, rocketing, cars, solar"

No he's not. He's tryna get as much cashola as he can while twits like Boutons think he's a "good guy".

He is not a capitalist. Socialist ? probably closer to the truth. His big three companies, space x, Tesla, the boring company all would be bankrupt without govt involvement.

now Musk is the target of an SEC lawsuit for fraud. Tesla lost $6B in market cap yesterday.

Tesla and the Securities and Exchange Commission were close to a no-guilt settlement but Elon Musk pulled out at the last minute, sources told CNBC.

Under the deal, Musk and Tesla would have had to pay a nominal fine, and the CEO would not have had to admit any guilt, the sources said. However, the settlement would have barred Musk as chairman for two years and would require Tesla to appoint two new independent directors, CNBC's David Faber, citing sources.

Hard to believe he was so stupid to talk about taking Tesla private, incredible, careless.

I'm also somewhat surprise the gutted, toothless, Repug SEC is playing hardball.

They could simply provide higher scores for journalists who report the news and leave their opinion at home. If they can't maintain a certain score then they should not be allowed anywhere near government.

Tesla's challenges extend beyond CEO's uncertain future

The news will likely lift or further depress Tesla's stock, which plunged by 14 percent Friday to wipe out more than $7 billion in shareholder wealth as investors fretted Musk's potential ouster.

Tesla's stock price is now about 30 percent below where it stood on Aug. 7,

shortly after Musk tweeted that he secured funding to buy all of Tesla's stock at $420 per share. The shares ended the week at $264.77.

investors nevertheless fear Musk might be forced out , leaving Tesla adrift when it could be in a financial bind.

Tesla already has ac ulated more than $10 billion in debt

while it has been burning through about $1 billion in cash every three months. It ended June with $2.2 billion in the bank,

meaning the company will likely have to borrow more unless it starts making money.

To compound matters, about $1.3 billion in debt is due to be repaid by March, including $230 million in November.

but will remain in his post as CEO.

Tesla and Musk will each pay a separate fine of $20 million

Musk will resign as chairman within 45 days.

    https://dailycaller.com/2021/02/23/e...puppet-master/

Tesla CEO Elon Musk quipped back at The Washington Post’s request for comment regarding an article about his future with the company, telling a reporter to give his “regards to your puppet master.”

The Post’s piece wondered if Tesla can “run on Autopilot” and declared that “Musk moved to Texas and embraced celebrity.” The article elaborated on “critics” who have concerns that Musk’s schedule and public personality “are beginning to show in the car company he runs.”

The company in question, Tesla, didn’t respond to The Post’s request for comment, the article notes. Musk, however, did – with just one sentence presumably aimed at The Post’s owner, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

“Give my regards to your puppet master,” Musk responded after a request for comment from the newspaper.

Bezos owns The Post, as noted in the article, and is mentioned as one of the examples of the potential for giant companies to stumble amid change. The Post noted that Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ 2011 death “prompted what some view as a loss of innovation at the tech giant.”
“Amazon will soon face the transition of founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos to executive chairman, testing the culture he’s instilled. (Bezos owns The Washington Post),” the article added before pointing out some of Musk’s political comments throughout the global pandemic.

“He knows whatever he says, people do and he’s taking advantage of it,” one anonymous employee reportedly said of Musk, according to The Post.
The worker reportedly recalled telling a co-worker that Musk “doesn’t care about you” and will “ruin you,” the piece also noted.
