CNN, like other large media outlets, is guided by marketing statisticians who know jack about longevity in business and everything about current trends. When you run a news organization as a profit first machine, you'll do anything to increase the bottom line, and that's what CNN and Fox are both doing. The trolling questions they ask are the news equivalent of the NBA flop - it's not in the spirit of the game and exploits human nature to achieve a desired outcome.
There's a niche market opportunity for a news filter to get rid of the one-off tabloid stories that feature sensational, click bait headlines and focus on only informational aspects.
Get rid of "Baby left in car in Georgia" (one off, not national news worthy)
Focus on "Congress voting on immigration bill" (national interest story, not a local sensational piece for clicks)

Conservatives hate public media because its content typically exceeds their comprehension and/or attention span. Given that they are threatened by such things, they conclude it's a vehicle for a liberal agenda. Just like science and round-earthers.
