Default What do you do when you are bored at work?

OK, so I have been at this job for about 4 months now and since I'm a new engineer, they aren't really giving me a whole lot of stuff to do right now. As a result, I sit around staring at the screen all day, bored to tears. We are behind a firewall, so I can't play games and majority of all the good sites are blocked. There are only so many times you can read the same threads over and over and the same news over and over. What do you do to cure the boredom blues?? Please help me as I am slowly going insane at what was supposed to be my dream job!

I start random threads on message boards

Go to WalMart and buy a couple of those little hand held games. Or do they frown on that at work? Can you read at work?

That's kind of frowned upon here. Maybe I can open up one of my texts and look like I'm doing research.

My job's been really laid back lately too, so I brought in a copy of Knuth's The Art of Computer Programming. That should keep me busy for a good 10 years or so.

I have a friend who would purposely put items on the floor near his desk where people passing by could clearly see them, then sit back and be entertained by their reaction. Some items he used: condoms, half-eaten bagles, rubber gloves, dollar bills, one of his shoes, etc. Always funny to see who tries to return an item (is this your condom on the floor?) and who will try to hide the shock on their face and quickly leave.

Not sure how this would go over at work (especially since you are new), but it's a thought!

Hmmm... I work with a bunch of engineers that probably haven't seen any action in a long time. I'm wondering if they would recognize a condom when they saw it.

At least next week I get 3 days out of my cube for some training.

Oh and did I mention that the guy that sits in the cube next to me is a gas machine??? I just got a audio reminder of that.

Maybe I need to move back to SA.

What type of engineering is it? We're always on the lookout for good civil engineers, techs and drafters.

Yeah, I was a little bored today. The same threads, as usual, were being regurgitated in the Spurs forum and The Club was worried about Coldplay and racists. I had to do something and I posted that stupid queer therapy story, but nobody bit on that. I tried. Let's do better tomorrow guys!!!

I read technical manuals when I get bored at work.

Can you develop an ancillary skill? Ancillary skills become survival skills.

Does your work include drudgery? Find a way to automate or simplify the drudgery so that you can fry bigger fish. You will thank yourself in the long run. I work in IT, so automating and simpliifying is part of the job description. It may not apply to your situation.
