I just bought a Samsung dual format HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player on eBay. It is a factory refurb, 90 day factory warranty, and was $359. I don't own any Blu-Ray discs yet. I'm filling in my collection with HD-DVDs and will buy new releases on Blu-Ray and stuff by the two studios that never released HD-DVDs. You can get both at places like CD Exchange or off eBay for reasonable prices.

BTW, I agree about Planet Earth. It's fucking amazing in HD.

Another thing I have found is that the quality of upscaling of regular DVDs varies wildly. Some stuff looks like it was mastered from a cell phone video theater bootleg (Spurs videos and anything Trek related), and some stuff actually upscales to 720p, which looks pretty damn good for regular DVD prices. The Matrix box set and the Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis series all upscale quite well.

You need a 1080p HDTV to really experience the Blu-Ray to its highest potential.
    You mean it gets better?

Looks pretty damn good on 1080i, IMO.

Depends on the movie, but with Planet Earth for example I actually noticed a pretty big difference between the 1080i Discovery broadcast and my 1080p blu-ray. It's crazy that it could get better, but it's true.

Didn't wanna start a new thread for this bit o' Blu-Ray news, but it was just announced a week or so ago that Tombstone and Armageddon will be released in April. It's about fucking time.

    link

As to the OP's topic, I just got my 100th blu-ray last night: The Godfather: Sapphire Edition.

It really is. I bought a PS3 over a year and a half ago, and the wait for that one KILLED me. It was the first thing I thought of when considering what movies could potentially rock my face off in HD. It didn't disappoint.

    I have on Blu-Ray:

The Watchmen Ultimate Collection - 4 disc special edition, it was selling for $60. I priced matched it at Best Buy for $20 based on an error from another store

    Terminator 2: Skynet Edition

    Michael Jackson's This Is It

    The Bourne Collection

    Goodfellas

I have a ton of HD movies on my PS3 hard drive like Black Dynamite, No Country For Old Men, Casino, Talk To Me, Up, Breakfast Club, The Untouchables, The Hurt Locker.

I'll pass on watchmen. All I hear is that a blue Wang is swinging to and fro and I don't need better resolution for that.

How is that skynet edition? I have the normal edition. Is it worth it to get this one. I'm a big fan of this movie. Does it have both versions of the movie?

I really want to get this is it. How are the extras? More music performances or interviews?

Also, how did you get HD content in your ps3? Via wifi or USB flash drive? I ask cuz I tried downloading the matrix but it gets in a loop of sorts and downloads twice the data compared to the size of the actual file. It was an 8 gb movie. I have a ps3 slim. I don't know if there's a size limit for downloads. I'm thinking I may just need to get a bigger USB flash drive.

I think the best blu-ray movie I have in my collection right now would have to be District 9. I don't have many in my collection (6), but out of those that movie looks immaculate on the BR.

I definitely wouldn't want my porn in blu-ray HD...

I'm not sure what's in the normal edition of T2 but you get quite a shitload of features like the theatrical and special edition cuts (15 mins more footage), 6.1 DTS, Picture-in-picture of behind the scenes video, text commentaries and multimedia galleries, Storyboard-script mode, interactive quizzes and games, commentary with cast, commentary with director, and a bunch of internet feature you can DL on your PS3 with BD-Live. You probably want that one if you're a big fan.

I watched This is It in theater, haven't had a chase to explore the BD in depth. The sound in my HT is great though, the video is great as well (except scenes that were originally shot in low-res). I can't speak about the extra cuz I haven't had a chance yet.

The PS3 only supports FAT32 file format (not NTFS), so the largest size of a file you can have is 4GB. I use mkv2vob to re-mux a MKV HD file into a VOB, split in 4GB files. I takes about 10 minutes to do.

I use a flash drive to transfer it over. An alternative (what a friend of mine does) is buy an external USB drive formatted FAT32 and just play your collection of converted HD movies from there.

BTW, for fans of Watchmen, the Ultimate Cut Edition interweaves the story of the 'Black Freighter' into the movie. It's pretty awesome, as the comic is narrated by Gerald Butler. Overall, the movie ends up being 3.5 hours.

Awesome! Thanks for the head's up on this one...

Also, if you buy the Zombieland Blu-Ray and have a PS3, there is a free theme change when you load the movie into the console...

    On BluRay, I have:

    American History X
    The Dark Knight
    Death Race
    District 9
    Donnie Darko
    Bram Stoker's Dracula
    Firefly: The Complete Series
    Inglorious Basterds
    Iron Man
    L.A. Confidential
    Pan's Labyrinth
    Sleeping Beauty
    Wall-E
    Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut

They all look amazing, and there are a ton more that I want on BluRay, but I'm trying to be good and stop spending money on frivolous things.

huh. no NTFS support?! i didn't even think about looking at that. that's strange. i didn't know the PS3 read VOB's. i guess i could do that. i'd also thought of getting a dedicated HD for it as well. thanks for the FAT32 tip, though. i'd have gone crazy if i didn't know that and tried to hook one up.

I have a 400 GB external USB drive I store all my shit on. I should probably just offload all my shit onto my 1 TB desktop drive and use that for my PS3 HD movies.

Just another heads up, amazon.co.uk has some pretty kickass deals of BDs, usually region free. You can get the Bourne/Matrix Triolgies for $30, Shawshank/Goodellas/etc. for about $12.

And when the fuck is BTTF coming out on Blu-Ray?

I don't care what your trouble is. You're telling me you're surprised that a Sony console doesn't support a proprietary Microsoft file system, I don't see what's so surprising about that, which is my fucking point. The PS3 also didn't support WMA's or WMV's (VC-1) initially.
