yeah my mother's pc was unusable when i got to it... thing wouldn't let me open task manager, shut down the pc, use any programs without crashing, etc etc...

somehow aČ cleaned it up enough to recognize task manager again and let me shut the pc down and get into safe mode which i was also not able to do. then after all that i ran sdfix which got rid of whatever else was plaguing that pc and then i put kaspersky on there to monitor the pc for future threats. all is working fine now and has been for the past 2-3 wks.

my mother's a real estate broker/paralegal so she has to use the internet and whatnot. she was freakin' out that she couldn't get her work done because her pc was ed. i asked her to stop looking at porn sites and just do her work. hahaha.

I've found some free pdf software which is reliable and very easy to use, and it lets you create a pdf from any application you might be using. PrimoPDF is available for free download at primopdf.com
It beats having to pay for the equivalent Adobe software.

music cataloging/organizing software, similar to iTunes, but not iTunes...?

also, small and simple music player, without a bunch of overhead crap?

I hate winamp. I've been using Billy for a few days, and I like it so far. very small and light. I use it to check the quality of songs I have just downloaded.

Dont know if any of these have been mentioned but here's a few that I use at work almost on a daily basis....

    For the more advanced user:

    HijackThis - http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro...-10227353.html

unit conversion utility (ie. miles to meters)

    Convert.exe - http://joshmadison.com/software/convert-for-windows/

Phyzik already took some programs I was going to mention: Malwarebytes, Convert and Hijack this. However I am not sure if superantispyware is that reliable anymore, I personally found that its detection rate was lower than malwarebytes. Then again different programs have different depths

    For antivirus
Antivir - http://www.free-av.com/ (It has never let me down)

    Firefox addons
Noscript - http://noscript.net/ (Great for blocking out unwanted javascripts, popups and seeing the page only you want to see)

    System Stability
Glary Registry Repair - http://www.glarysoft.com/rr.html (Great for registry cleaning but as always with registry review the entries carefully and backup first)

    Media
Foxit Reader - http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/reader3.php (Great alternative for reading pdf files; lightweight, light on resources, image quality can be argued but see it for yourself)

Sumatra - http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/...pdf/index.html (another alternative for reading pdf files;you can compare both foxit and sumatra to see which one is more desirable for you in terms of tools, image quality and loading time. Personally I prefer foxit right now)

Klite codec pack - http://codecpackguide.com/klmcodec.htm (someone above me already mentioned it. Great for codecs and converters)

    Utilities
Revouninstaller - http://www.revouninstaller.com/ (Great for uninstalling programs and cleaning up the files and registry afterwards. As with any program, review the files and registry it is removing. Reliable, lightweight and portable)

The reason I mentioned Superantimalware is because of the new antivirus 2009 bull malware. For some reason Malwarebytes kept crashing when I tried to run it with that malware on the system.

Other than that, Malwarebytes is always my first option for malware.

Superantimalware in safemode followed by Malwarebytes took care of it. I had to still use hijackthis for some of it and go into the msconfig to disable some things but it cleared it up.

Oh funny because my case was exactly the opposite. Superantispyware (I presume you are talking about that) crashed on me and malwarebytes saved my system. I usually just keep one around and sometimes install tthe other during monthly checks. Just goes to show that no one program can be the best.

Also if the topic starter is going to edit his first post then also include physik's idea of performing system management in safe mode. It is the best environment because it loads only the necessary files to run the system freeing the other files which normally wouldn't be scanned. I am sure someone can write instructions to get access into safe mode.

    Msconfig and hijack this

If you are unsure on how to use hijack this or think you have a problem with your system then this site http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/forums.html is excellent in assisting you. They are very professional (not random people cleaning your system), thorough and are willing to help you

Thought I would share this. Blender was already mentioned I believe with the first post. Awesome open source 3D program. One of my favorite programs to play with.

    Blender.org

So, for all those 3D apps people on here the site below offers really nice "FREE" textures.
I know this isn't software, but it's "free-ness" that is a must in such software like Blender.

    Search everything for windows
    http://www.voidtools.com/
"Everything" is an administrative tool that locates files and folders by filename instantly for Windows.
Unlike Windows search "Everything" initially displays every file and folder on your computer (hence the name "Everything").
You type in a search filter to limit what files and folders are displayed.

Just thought I would add one of my current favorite free apps. TeamViewer is an awesome free Remote log in tool. I use this to help my dad with his laptop issues from half across the country.

The files generated by photo story 3 are .wmv, not .wav, and should be on My Do ents -> Videos

You can use DVD Flick. It's free, and you can find guides on their site on how to use it. It should work with your wmv files just fine.

Not a tutorial, but QuickMediaConverter is a pretty great app for rendering video files into smaller formats. You could probably convert a film to VCD format for a tiny footprint (as long as you're aware your image quality will be substantially worse).
