The San Antonio Spurs face a tough challenge tonight in the Frost Bank Center. The Spurs, 9-36, take on the Minnesota Timberwolves, a team with a record of 32-13. The T-Wolves are tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder atop the Western Conference standings. Only the Boston Celtics have a better record than Minnesota.
The Spurs are coming off a win over the Portland Trail Blazers. Jeremy Sochan led the way with 31 points and 14 rebounds in 32 minutes. He shot 12-for-20 from the field, 4-for-7 from three-point land and 3-for-3 at the free throw line. San Antonio also got 21 points and 16 rebounds off the bench from Keldon Johnson (see the Grades).
The Timberwolves have won two straight games and six of their last eight contests. Their latest win was a 96-94 victory in Brooklyn over the Nets. Karl-Anthony Towns led the way for Minnesota with 27 points and ten rebounds.
On Jan. 22, Towns scored 62 points for the Timberwolves against the Charlotte Hornets. Amazingly, though, the T-Wolves lost that game to the lowly Charlotte Hornets.
San Antonio Spurs Injury Update
The big news for the Spurs is that Victor Wembanyama will suit up even though this is a back-to-back for the Spurs. In recent weeks, the rookie had been sitting out back-to-backs. That, apparently, will no longer be the case going forward.
Zach Collins is questionable for the game versus the Timberwolves due to right ankle soreness. Since returning from injury, Collins has struggled. In five games, he’s averaging 7.8 points and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 35% from the field, 13.3% from the three-point line and 64.3% from the charity stripe. The Spurs may opt to give their backup center a break in order to allow his ankle to recover more.
Tre Jones missed a recent game with an ankle injury but he was able to play against the Trail Blazers and he’s not listed on the injury report for tonight’s game.
San Antonio Spurs Starting Lineup
With the return of Tre Jones, the Spurs are back to their normal starting lineup of Jones at point guard, Devin Vassell at shooting guard, Julian Champagnie at small forward, Jeremy Sochan at power forward and Victor Wembanyama at center.
If Zach Collins misses the game, expect the backup center minutes to go to either Dominick Barlow or Sandro Mamukelashvili.
Betting Guide: Spurs vs. Timberwolves
The Timberwolves are favored by 10.5 points and the over/under is 228 points. The smart money tonight is on the over. The Spurs will be motivated going up against won of the better teams in the NBA. The Timberwolves may find it easy to score against San Antonio’s inconsistent defense. Add it together and this could turn into a high scoring affair.
