He would have gave that same reaction with anyone willing to draft him, the first round status was just a bonus. I guess when you play in the Summit league your whole college career, even sniffing the NBA is a blessing...

You do realize that he was recruited by Florida and chose to stay home to be near his family/grandpa. He also had opportunities to transfer to bigger schools and didn't. So stop acting like he's a scrub who had no choice but to play in the Summit.
He would have gotten picked by Boston at 30 if the Spurs didn't pick him, so it's not like the Spurs were the only ones looking at him. He had an incredible showing in Orlando and did extremely well against the players from the "bigger" schools.

I honestly think the Spurs have a solid backup in Hill. Finally. The guy is a good ball player. Will he be a Chris Paul? Uh no, but he will be a reliable player for the Spurs.

Portland is stacked at SF. They're stacked everywhere. Rumors were they were after Alexander, but they get a pretty nice SF they can develop, a super athlete with multiple skills who won't draw a lot of shots away from their developing other players. Portland is running a rebuilding clinic right now, with Seattle shortly behind.

What I know is he is some undersized 2 guard that put up nice numbers at a mostly unknown conference against unknown college players. He then "supposedly" had such a great Orlando camp that he was left off pretty much all the 1st round mocks. He then had everyone on this board pretty much going "WTF" when his name was announced by David Stern. After that, pretty much all the post draft analysis I've seen is second guessing the pick because there were, what was understood by most experts, to be better players available. If you think this all translates to an "awesome" Spurs draft, you are more than entitled to feel that way I guess...congratulations.

Ok prick...since the Spurs aren't gonna take the pick back, nothing we can do now but wait and see. Just because the pick was #26 though, that doesn't mean there werent other players available that could help this team next year. Only time will tell but this screams reach and I have a feeling we will be saying "should have taken <blank>" in the next couple of years...
Mr. Body
06-27-2008, 12:00 PM
It might come down to Hill vs. Greene and Arthur. CDR and Chalmers will be forgotten as second round picks -- they may succeed but for some reason people think of 2nd rounders in different terms.
What's a little annoying is the Spurs elected to reach for a guy who is relegated automatically to the bench while Greene or Arthur have greater starter capabilities. Does a back-up point really impact this team more than a shooting, long SF or a dynamic PF? The Spurs FO says 'yes'. Giving a promise to Hill, if they ever did, makes no sense. Was he pulling out of the draft or something?

Yes. Going against promises tends to damage a team's reputation. I wonder what the fallout of the double promise, spam email situation will be. Regardless, why give a promise to Hill in the first place? He's going to be there, he's not pulling out of the draft, as far as I know he didn't stop working out at that point for other teams, so what?

Figures. Just about the time I start doubting Pop and RC, they go and pick a character guy.
Looking at the pictures (praying together and getting choked up when he got drafted), plus what Kori said about him choosing to stay, I'm liking this guy more and more. He's the kind of guy that I'm going to have an easy time rooting for.
Props Spurs FO.

I think Kori mentioned in one of the other threads on Hill that Boston wanted him with the 30th pick?
LA was wanting to move up into the early 2nd round to nab him and Cleveland was interested as well.
The Spurs probably made the promise knowing he wouldn't be there at 45.

Normally you get something for giving a guy a promise. He stays in the draft (Mahinmi) or he shuts down workouts for other teams. None of that happened here. Regardless of what other teams might have wanted -- and I'm not sure the Celtics would have taken Hill there, since they passed on Chalmers -- promising a guy who is basically guaranteed to be there with your pick and has no reason to be given a promise can prevent you from taking a Darrell Arthur when he slips.

I think we could argue degrees of impact until the cows come home.
I thought about this too (which is why I was hoping for CDR), but I think that this gives the Spurs a few more options in its own right.
First, it obviously gives the Spurs the option of resting Tony without having to slow the pace of the game (sorry Vaughn, it's just the truth). But, I think it also gives the Spurs the option of running more plays for Manu and Barry other than the iso's that they tend to run when Tony is resting.

Who gives a crap if he prays? Can he play?
I brought up the prayer thing because IMO that gives us a slightly better than even chance that he doesn't shoot up topless bars or give rides to wanted felons (sorry, I live in Indy so those are still fresh in my mind).
As for the "Can he play?" we'll find out this summer.

My other issue is that more value could have been squeezed out of the 26 pick if all they wanted was George Hill. There were teams, I'm sure, who would have wanted Arthur as their second choice, or a team like Detroit or Boston who hadn't picked yet. Can't you pick Arthur for Detroit, take Hill with their pick, and get something extra? Does this not occur to the Spurs FO?

We just need to give the kid a chance, he might surprise us or disappoint us, but at least the Spurs are going in the right direction by taking chances at getting younger.Younger.

Pulling the 'Poor little oppressed poster, oh woe is me' card?
All that's missing is the eyeliner. :lmao
As opposed to the "hey look at me! I'm gonna put this poster in his place! The Spurs are always right and I will shove it in anyone's face that disagrees" internet bully card?
All that's missing is the comic book guy cut out in front of your PC...

I agree with your opinions on the draft and the Spurs FO, because they are of course right... GO HILL GO! :flag:
That had nothing to do with my question.

Who's bitching? All I've done for several posts is be positive...I guess that doesn't fly either. All the bitching is coming from people tired of reading bitching, which I stopped about 2 pages ago... :lmao

Cool pics.
From what I have read thus far, it seems like this Hill kid is a hard worker and won't take things for granted. As a Spurs fan, that is all I can ask. He obviously has talent.

Now that's called setting the record straight.

His personality and determination makes him easy to root for, so that's one plus going in. Now hopefully he can play at the pro level.

Production still has to be made, we'll see how wide your smile is next may. Future blah, we have blah, none of it matters unless you win. I'm not talking about moral victories, "Oh, Oden didn't play and we we're almost in the playoffs"....I like the Blazers but don't turn into the Lakers. :nope

I've posted at SR for a while now and lurked here for the last year before registering. When reading this thread, I thought I was back at SR. I wished they would've been able to get Batum... all the "FO knows best" and "CIA Pop" people say it was a great move because it addressed a need. Bottom line is a guy from a small conference is an even more unknown commodity than someone who played top-level college ball. If it's such a prize to get a guy who's ceiling is "back up NBA point guard", then why didn't they just stick with Darius Washington? Pop must know something we don't know! :lol
I hope he proves me wrong, but I remain skeptical :wow

First off, Washington sucks. Hell his euro team doesn't want him. He got cut from the Toros. That doesn't tell you something?
No one said his "ceiling" was back up point.
Thats the need they addressed.
I don't see why people are making this more difficult than it is.

The CIA Pop mantra has gone far past its shelf life. The Spurs FO are serious laggards at this point at least over what their reputation is. I'm glad we have Hill, but this was a pretty bad draft considering the possibilities.

I brought up the prayer thing because IMO that gives us a slightly better than even chance that he doesn't shoot up topless bars or give rides to wanted felons (sorry, I live in Indy so those are still fresh in my mind).
As for the "Can he play?" we'll find out this summer.
