The original. It's not my favorite horror movie because it's the scariest... But because it's the best movie I've seen that I could characterize as horror. Good social commentary, fun... and very few of those typical "Why would anyone do THAT?" horror movie moments.

What's yours?

The Excorcist.

The original Blob in 1957. God damn red glob gave me nightmares for the rest of my life. Steve McQueen was the man.

I've got to go with Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead tied for second. I liked the remake of Dawn of the Dead and Shaun of the Dead was no slouch. Funny stuff for a zombie flick.

Even though the beginning of The Exorcist is not all that....I would have to pick it.

I even like the first two Halloween.

I remember a film from the late or mid 80s with Randy Quaid called Parents. It wasn't so much scary as it was disturbing. Nothing like canabalism to cheer the room up. Jeez, I couldn't eat meat for six months.

I like Dawn of the Dead (original). As far as spoofs, Shaun of the Dead and Night of the Comet were hilarious.

Michael Myers is the man. Haloween and Haloween II started a revolution in horror suspense slasher films.

Jaws had an effect that has never left me. To this day, if I swim too far out into the Ocean my legs start to get that hors d'oeuvre feeling...

I had trouble sleeping for two months after seeing Invasion of the Body Snatchers(the second one).

The Thing(again the second one) is pure fun horror film.

Alien(s) were both pretty intense flicks.

The Changeling is still pretty creepy to this day...A Great Ghost Story.

The Night Stalker and Frankenstein: The True Story, both get special mention for being memorable TV films.

The scariest movie of all time, not my favorite, because I was scared shitless, is The Exorcist. Being Catholic, I believe in that crap and I could not sleep for months w/o the covers pulled over my head.

And now, just to fuck with me, I think, what does my nephew name his first daughter? Reagan.

Silence of the Lambs - classic for a reason. It's scary in that creepy you'll-be-thinking-about-it-the-next-time-you-see-a-moth/sewing machine/infrared goggles/white jacket/rack of lamb kind of way. Anthony Hopkins is the man.

I don't know about the rest of you but the first time I watched The Blair Witch Project I was scared shitless.

I'm an idiot and saw that a couple of days before I went camping for a month in the Tetons. Then I read Silence of the Lambs while I was out there - I don't think I slept that whole month.

Jeepers Creepers (1) creeped me out... especially when you spend the whole movie endearing yourself to one of the characters and then at the end you see him with his eyeballs torn out... I didn't like that song for months after I saw that movie (or that Jingle Bells song that kind of sounds like it)

One of my favs was Silence of the Lambs too.

The Exorcist didn't scare me in the least bit. My Catholic roommate absolutely refused to watch it though. :spin

Child's Play.

Possessed dolls are seriously disturbing for me. :oops

Oh, man...the best part of Child's Play was when Chuckie was in the elevator.

Lady: "My, what an ugly looking doll!" (or something like that)
Chucky: "Fuck You!"

:lol

I really don't like to watch horror movies. Not that they scare me but because a lot of them are the same and I always find myself saying, "Don't go in there, you idiot! Haven't you ever watched a horror movie???"

The Omen was the first movie that ever really freaked me out, but The Ring was the only movie I've never been able to watch a second time.

Excellent choices listed already, especially:

The Shining
The Exorcist
Anything Romero

...but I can't believe no one mentioned Evil Dead!

Also, I loved that vampire movie with Lance Henrickson and Bill Paxton...what the hell was that called?

That's right! Near Dark. Vampires with no fangs. Loved the concept...

Good flick! Well, it was in the '80s...

I'm glad to see Jaws getting love on this list. That movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid...
