Free Agent Watch: Day 1
By: Preetom Bhattacharya

Calderon Has a Deal: According to a posting on his website, Jose Calderon has a new deal with his old team. "Early this morning, through my agents, I reached a preliminary agreement with the Toronto Raptors," Calderon wrote on his website. He won't be able to sign the deal until July 9, but the verbal agreement goes a long way in the Raptors securing a lineup for next season that will feature Jermaine O'Neal and Chris Bosh in the paint with Jason Kapono and Calderon on the perimeter. Terms of Calderon's deal are not yet known, but it's likely his deal is close to what the Raptors gave TJ Ford in 2006, a contract of four years and about $33-million. Calderon average 11.2 points and 8.3 assists per game last year while splitting starting duties with the now-departed Ford.

Agent Zero to the Max: The Golden State Warriors quickly rebounded from Baron Davis' stunning decision to opt out of his $17.8-million salary for next year by reportedly offering a five-year, $100-million deal to Gilbert Arenas. The Warriors drafted Arenas in the second round of the 2001 NBA Draft but lost him when the Wizards signed him for $65-million in 2003; the Sacramento Kings also reportedly gave Arenas a phone call. Washington countered the Warriors' offer by putting a maximum deal, about $124-million over six years, on the table for Agent Zero and he's expected to stay with the Wizards. That agreement could come as early as later this afternoon, as Arenas is scheduled to fly to China for a promotional tour with adidas later today and said he will not negotiate while on the trip.

Posey in Play: Coming off of a key role on a championship squad, James Posey is receiving interest from plenty of teams around the league. Largely seen as the "final piece", Posey's defensive ability and three-point shooting are intriguing to teams that feel they are very close to making a championship run and identify him as someone that can help push a team over the top. It's no surprise, then, that Posey has been reportedly linked to the Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers, New Orleans Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs, and Dallas Mavericks, all of whom were playoff teams last year. The Celtics have made it a priority to bring Posey back as well.

PGs Getting Attention: Sacramento Kings point guard Beno Udrih has piqued the interest of the Knicks, Clippers, and Kings, and is expecting a full Mid-Level deal. Tyronn Lue may be getting phone calls from the Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns very soon. Chris Duhon reportedly received a phone call from the New York Knicks, getting an offer of two-years, $6 million, and could be hearing from the Cleveland Cavaliers as well.

Barnes Done By the Bay?: At the Warriors press conference to introduce draft picks Anthony Randolph and Richard Hendrix on Monday, head coach Don Nelson candidly said that "Matt Barnes and Cro (referring to Austin Croshere), those guys will not be back." Barnes told Contra Costa Times beat writer Geoff Lepper via text message that he "would love to be a Warrior" but added "it doesn't look like I'm wanted." Barnes is wanted somewhere, though, as the Dallas Mavericks are reportedly interested in his services.

Spurs Are Old, Don't Care: Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich admitted that his team is "old as dirt", but that isn't stopping the Spurs from attempting to sign their own free agents to new contracts with the team. Kurt Thomas (35), Michael Finley (35), and Robert Horry (37) are all still on the Spurs' radar to return to the franchise. The prospects of both Thomas and Horry coming back are important for San Antonio because they'll need big men due to Tiago Splitter's decision to remain in Europe. The Spurs are also aligning themselves for cap space in the summer of 2010, so short-term deals with their older players may be in the cards. The team is also rumored to be enamored with younger players JR Smith, Roger Mason Jr., and Carlos Delfino, but no deal is on the table just yet.

In Other Old Man News: Sam Cassell is receiving interest from the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, and Dallas Mavericks in addition to a possible offer to stay with the Boston Celtics. Brent Barry received a phone call right at 12:01 AM last night, reportedly getting an offer from the Houston Rockets.
