Whether you agreed with him or not, the guy stood up for what he believed in. Of course, I'm sure that won't matter to many of the folks on this forum.

Immaturity, profanity and name calling by the left-leaning folks in 3...2...

Helms stood up for the racism he believed in, because his white bubba constituency was racist. Helms dying doesn't change anything about his racist career.

The irony of a Texan ripping someone's "bubba constituency" is really amusing.

Helms was a racist redneck raised to the level of the US Senate. During his time in office he fought the Civil Rights movement tooth and nail and was also against foreign aid to poor countries. Helms is now dead. It's too bad the racism and politics of hate that he espoused won't die with him. It's too widespread.

Point made...and taken.

Classic examples of how divided the country is on politics...and how immature the average person is. It's sad, really.

A few JH quotes:
"White people, wake up before it is too late. Do you want Negroes working beside you, your wife and your daughters, in your mills and factories?" (1950)
"The Negro cannot count forever on the kind of restraint that's thus far left him free to clog the streets, disrupt traffic, and interfere with other men's rights." (1963)
"Crime rates and irresponsibility among Negroes are a fact of life which must be faced." (1981)
"The University of North Carolina (UNC)... the University of Negroes and Communists..." (1995)
"Blacks, gays and lesbians are responsible for the proliferation of AIDS"
"There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy." (1988)
"All Latins are volatile people." (1986)
"The New York Times and Washington Post are both infested with homosexuals themselves. Just about every person down there is a homosexual or lesbian."
"The government should spend less money on people with AIDS because they got sick as a result of deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct." (1995)
"Mr. Clinton better watch out if he comes down here [Fort Bragg]. He'd better have a bodyguard. " (1994)
"What is really at stake is whether or not America will allow the cultural high ground in this nation to sink slowly into an abyss of slime to placate people who clearly seek or are willing to destroy the Judaic-Christian foundations of this republic." (1990)
"I've been portrayed as a caveman by some. That's not true. I'm a conservative progressive, and that means I think all men are equal, be they slants, beaners or ######s." (1985)
"I have tried at every point to seek God's wisdom on the decisions I made, and I made it my business to speak up on behalf of the things God tells us are important to Him."

Yes...it's ironic to see someone from a state with a large "bubba" factor ripping someone for being from a state with a large "bubba" factor. :rolleyes

Were you educated at UT?

As for Helms...yep the guy was a racist. As were/are:

- Bob Byrd* (former KKK member)
- Al Gore's father* (voted against the Civil Rights Act)
- Joe Biden* (""You cannot go to a 7-11 or Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian Accent.")
- Hillary Clinton* (too many incidents to list)
- Jesse Jackson* (even more incidents than Hillary Clinton)

*Democrat

The racist statements made by Helms can't be defended. However, his strong stances against runaway spending, strong stances against the spread of communism and support of the military were key contributions.

I'm convinced -- we should be celebrating the greatness that was Jesse Helms as a moral pillar of American society and politics.

Helms is a dumbass and an ignorant racebaiter...he's pretty monstrous. I don't know if he's worse than Kennedy...I have to think about that. The stories about him and Ryan White and White's mother pretty much show what a complete piece of ignorant trash he is.

But one thing I know is that he hasn't said anything Robert Byrd didn't say at one time....where's condemnation for him? Because he is now owned completely by the NAACP he somehow has more ethics? I doubt it....be sure to save some outrage...

Hmmm...

Helms was "bitterly opposed to federal financing of AIDS research and treatment".[13] Opposing the Kennedy-Hatch AIDS bill in 1988, Helms stated, "There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy."[14] When Ryan White died in 1990, his mother went to Congress to speak to politicians on behalf of people with AIDS. She spoke to 23 representatives: Helms refused to speak to her even when she was alone with him in an elevator.[15] Despite opposition by Helms, the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Care (CARE) Act passed in 1990.

Opposition to AIDS funding
Having attempted, and failed, to block passage of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Care (CARE) Act passed in 1990, Helms tried to block its refunding in 1995, saying that those with AIDS were responsible for the disease, because they had contracted it because of their "deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct",

You want name calling? This guy is a complete idiot who was unfit to hold public office. And it is a joke that he did.

Exactly what constituency was he representing? The complete fucking idiots?

Come on -- sure, among other things, he was a racist and a homophobe, but at least he didn't hide behind political correctness on those issues; he let everyone know damned well that he was a racist and a homophobe.

In fact, he showed the courage that we should hope for from all racists, homophobes, and others who hold such absurd views.

I wish the lemming libtards here would grow up. Yes, he was a racist. So what. He grew up in a different time, and there are more demonrats who are racist from his era than republicans.

I cannot say he was a stellar person, I haven't a clue. Still, I have no doubt he had far better morals than most other politicians.

As for fighting against civil rights. That was at least a decade before he was a senator. I doubt you will find legislation from him against civil rights or gay rights. Only against special rights.

Racism should always be excused, as should all forms of overt bigotry, so long as the racist bigot is willing to just admit to who he or she is.

I should hope that my kids grow up to be as honorable as Jesse Helms or Robert Byrd.

A few JH quotes:
"White people, wake up before it is too late. Do you want Negroes working beside you, your wife and your daughters, in your mills and factories?" (1950)

Nobody disagrees he was a racist.

"The Negro cannot count forever on the kind of restraint that's thus far left him free to clog the streets, disrupt traffic, and interfere with other men's rights." (1963)

A time when protests were in fact causing problems.

"Crime rates and irresponsibility among Negroes are a fact of life which must be faced." (1981)

Still true today in general.

"Blacks, gays and lesbians are responsible for the proliferation of AIDS"

Mostly true for the time. Exclude lesbians and it was true for the time. AIDS easiest method of transmission is anal sex. This is a method than most gays use. My understanding is that more black couples practice anal sex than white also. AIDS can be transmitted by regular sex, but not as easily.

"There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy." (1988)

This was true at the time.

"All Latins are volatile people." (1986)

Obvilusly not true, but we all sometimes say 'all' when it doesn't apply. My observation is that latins in general are!

"The government should spend less money on people with AIDS because they got sick as a result of deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct." (1995)

As time went by, he changed his view on this one.

"Mr. Clinton better watch out if he comes down here [Fort Bragg]. He'd better have a bodyguard. " (1994)

Only saying what the service members couldn't say or act on.

"What is really at stake is whether or not America will allow the cultural high ground in this nation to sink slowly into an abyss of slime to placate people who clearly seek or are willing to destroy the Judaic-Christian foundations of this republic." (1990)

And libtards are willing, with the demoncraps leadig the way.

You know, there are several good quotes too. Here's one of them:

I became a Republican when a very wise young lady asked me how I could remain a Democrat when I didn't agree with what they stood for and did agree with what the Republicans supported.

All those racist remarks were probably when talking to fellow demonrats. Wouldn't it be funny if he really wasn't a racist, but thought he had to be around fellow democrats?

Stop trying to excuse the ignorant SOB! being a racist pig is about as low as you can go, and the fact that you're even trying to shine a positive light onto his life is fucking ridiculous. The man was scum. Of course, I've seen you post some stupid shit before Wild Cobra, but your professed love for this inbred piece of shit tops the charts.

Just because you might happen to agree with him on economics or big government, doesn't change the fact this man was severely lacking in the decency department. Like I said, the world is better off.

There are much worse things politicians can do with a smile on their face.

Helms is an idiot...in case you didn't know this, Ryan White wasn't a degenerate homosexual who deservedly got a disease from his "sinful, disgusting" etc. sexual activities. Near as I can tell...he never engaged in sodomy of any kind...yet he died of AIDs nonthless. And Helms did not give a shit...and he wouldn't even talk to the kids mother as he was fighting to prevent funding research for the disease that killed her completely innocent child.

And he claimed the only people that got it were homosexuals and drug users...

That's not being a product of another time, that's not a difference of opinion...that's being fucking ignorant. That's incomparably ignorant when the reality and truth is staring you right there in the face...and America, and Americans, aren't served by having someone that fucking stupid making decisions that effect their lives.

He was a stupid stupid man...and this is easily provable by his stance that only homosexuals and drug users were at risk to get HIV, when he had the living breathing and dying evidence that he was wrong staring him right there in the face.

There's no excusing his ignorance...he was just that, ignorant.

A child hemophilliac ends any possibility of this being a matter of opinion, a generational gap, a generalized truth about cultural, or ethnic tendencies...or anything of that sort. It wasn't a disease that only targets those gulty of sin...it targets everyone. Easily provable fact.

Whether you agreed with him or not, the guy stood up for what he believed in.

Two things I've never understood:

1. Why are we supposed to care when public figures die just because they're public figures?

2. Why are we supposed to respect those who always speak their mind and don't seem to have any idea of when to keep their mouths shut? I have more regard for racist bigots who manage to keep their bigotry relatively secret than those who parade and practically boast of their ignorance.

I know little about helms and what good or bad he did in his lifetime. However, our founding fathers were racist and are still some of the most respected people. Being a bigot is wrong, but doesn't mean someone can't do more good than bad. I'm sure that's the argument racist black muslims would make.

Pardon me if I don't join in on the beating-the-dead-horse frenzy, but you all are doing just fine on your own.

I have no tolerance for racists, bigots, etc., and there is nothing that Helms and his ilk can do to reverse or undo the harm that their acts of blind, ignorant hatred have caused, but, it seems as if Helms finally started to "get it" in the end;

Helms coauthored a bill authorizing $600 million for international AIDS relief efforts. In 2002, Helms announced that he was ashamed to have done so little during his Senate career to fight the worldwide spread of AIDS and pledged to do more during his last few months in the Senate.
