The PMs are only good if I stay on that one screen name. And being it's the 4th of July I may want to do some trolling, so use this topic to work on your pc. :tu

for anyone reading this: I just gotta say MOUSE IS THE MAN! Dude knows his stuff.

----

So mouse, after opening avast again, it prompted me for a boot scan which I ran. All of a sudden it was picking up things left and right. I started deleting some and quarantining others to see what they were. (I'll list the ones I saved here[/edit here]). After that all things went back to normal, at least as far as I can tell.

Here is the first link.
So I still went along and ran ewido and it was a pretty detailed scan, it took about an hour and 1/2. Although it only found 2 things: 1 tracking cookie, and 1 adware.

Try this and post how many errors.
Right after I ran RegCure and it was speedy, but found 1363 errors! Most of them in File/Path references (579) and Empty registry keys (695). can't clean em yet.

I'm gonna keep working on this a little more throughout the day, I'll keep you posted.

As long as you did the Avast boot up scan I am sure the serious stuff is gone.

Appreciate the help. :)

mouse,

(update) After running the avast and ewido, things started to go back to the way they were. I could access email, all websites were accessible again, and virus removal/quarantine notifications from mcafee stopped.

So today I turned on the laptop again with the intention of running the complete version of RegCure. Although the 1st thing that happened was a virus notification from avast (smss.exe) and one from mcafee (generic downloader). I quarantined them and continued on just to see what else was still on the fritz. So when I was in firefox, the weird pop up windows of random shit (life insurance, internet game sites, etc.) were still popping up. So I ran my AdAware scan and found 7 items, none of them were different from the stuff i'd seen it catch before.
Then I continued on and ran RegCure and it found and cleaned all 1370 errors.

So that's where it's at currently. I keep you updated, i might try another ewido scan or another anti-adware/spyware program if the popups continue.

edit- also, does the avast home ed. program that I have expire after a certain amount of time?

...
.

btw, I am planning on compensating you after all is said and done.

Thank you mouse! I got it back yesterday. He replaced the dc jack and it's working perfectly. I never would have thought of craigslist, if I had sent it back to HP it would have cost me at least double and taken weeks to get done. The guy that fixed it was wonderful, if I have any more problems I know where to go.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it. :)

Actually I was worried about Craig's list. You never know what your going to get, who knows the man could have ruined your board and then I would have not been able to sleep.

For at least an hour.
I used Craig's' list to find a way out of doing something I don't want to do. Right now I am on Craig's list to see who I can get to assemble Joe Chalupa's trampoline that has been sitting in his dusty garage for 4 years. Our goal is to get it put together before his kids are out of collage.

So don't thank me for being a lazy coward! :smokin

Then I guess I got lucky.

The guy I found is a certified tech, working at the college computer store, he had great references. And the laptop is fine.

You suggested it, it was my choice to use it and I did my homework before I gave it to him.

Appreciate the help, whatever the motive.
