View Full Version : Too many teams in the NBA? Pure fantasy solution, discuss

It's all about $ but maybe we have too many teams in the league. Ok, with 30 teams, if they took turns winning it each season, that's a long wait for a title. Some franchises will win it more often than not, but most will remain titleless for near a lifetime or longer.

We can either leave things as they are or a drastic change can be made. Suppose for an instant, the league went to 32 teams then merged franchises. This could be done regionally. Each team has a name of two cities, and has two nicknames. The Los Angeles Lakers/Clippers. The San Antonio & Houston Spurs/Rockets. Schedule goes up to 84 games and each team plays 21 games at home in the original city. Now, the rosters get increased to about 24 players. For the Spurs and Rockets fans, your team starts Yao, Duncan, McGready, Parker, and make your own final pick. Your bench is incredibly deep. Well, so is every other team in the league.

However, the result of this realignment is that every player gets less playing time. This should lengthen their careers, and minimize the affect of injuries to key personal. It also makes coaching and team work an interesting challenge.

With the amount of talent we have in the league, this solution will bring high quality basketball to every team. That would sell tickets. It would draw television ratings.

Naturally, many people around the nation would react in horror to such a revision. Some arch rival teams may end up merging. However, think about it. Will your team be winning a title and fielding a great team often in the next generation? For many fans of several different teams, the answer sadly will be no.

It's off season. The board is quiet. My idea will never happen, but it merits some discussion since as things are, the future will be bleak for most teams. Looking forward to reading your opinions.

I think the amount of teams in the NBA is fine the way it is. The fact that it's hard to have a chance at winning the title only makes it more satisfying if you win it.

It could be more entertaining, since there would be more talent on each team, but in a 24 players roster, some players would never find playing time.

LOL maybe we could play basketball with 10 players each on the court with that setup.

that'd be confusing as hell.

Your first argument is quite valid. To the second, another radical solution is to add two more quarters so there are 2 "halftimes". Or keep it as it is and rely on extending careers.

:lol clever! Maybe keep 5 guys on defense the whole game, and five on offense. No more fast breaks and players that can't play defense can focus on offense, and vice versa. Ben Wallace and Baron Davis last longer, lol.

Taking it further...here is a proposed new league:
West:
Pacific:
Lakers/Clippers
Warriors/Kings
Blazers/Sonics (new expansion)
Suns/Jazz

Midwest:
Spurs/Rockets
Mavericks/Oklahoma whoevers
Hornets/Grizzlies
Nuggets/T-Wolves

East:
Southern:
Heat/Magic
Hawks/Bobcats
Pacers/St Louis (new expansion)
Wizards/Cavs

Atlantic:
Knicks/Nets
Celtics/Sixers (lol, arch rivals)
Pistons/Raptors
Bulls/Bucks

They can have two sets of jerseys displaying both logos, but use original team colors when playing at home. Alternate on road equally. Yeah, I was bored when I thought of this topic. :)

From a fans perspective and quality of play, it wouldn't hurt to lose 2, 3 or even 4 teams from the NBA.

Stern would never go for that, he's for expansion if anything.

I can get a free password to every major porn site on the net. I don't bother, I have no time. But I did get one to AnetteDawn.com hence my signature. What I propose isn't all that far-fetched. Reality is, a number of teams are never going to win it all. If half the league can't find playing time, they can go to Europe and earn the bucks and elevate the level of foreign play. It's a basketball forum where we share views. I shared mine. You posted but didn't add much on the topic with your post. What would you say if this actually happened about your new incredibly loaded team?

I probably would say that the NBA season is too long. Every NBA should play every other team twice during the season. That would equalize every NBA schedule and negate any perceived/apparent conference weakness. Plus, the grind of the NBA season would no longer be as strenuous. The Playoff product would be better. Careers of quality players would be extended.

The problem isn't too many teams, but too many fans. If nobody paid attention to the NBA, there would be less incentive to fix games since there would be nothing at stake. Eliminate the fans and you have a perfect product!

:lmao and maybe some of the players could be on horseback and some could carry tazers and there could be a statue at center court and... to be honest, yes, the off season is that boring! I find myself thinking up crazy fantasy hoops things too....

The game already lasts 2 and a half hours. Making it longer wouldn't be good IMO. Maybe if you limit the amount of minutes that a player can stay on the court. Or increase the number of players allowed in the court.

We could also allow them to fight and give them weapons, I always wondered who are the best fighters in the NBA.:downspin:

Downsizing may happen on its own. We don't really have an era yet to match Bird/Magic of the 80's and Jordan of the 90's. If the league falters teams may just start folding and that could mushroom into an implosion. Whole franchises would disappear. My idea keeps the teams' identities although they're shared. If the league does decrease there will be some killer dispersal drafts! Other major sports have the same situation of too many teams. It may hit one of those sports first.

From an American point of view, the ABA of the sixties thrived for a few years and they did get some great players and all the best referees. Draftees could choose from the bids teams from both leagues offered. Abdul Jabbar was offered more money to play for the New York Nets than the Milwaukee Bucks tendered. Kareem chose the NBA because of the better level of competition. It was his childhood dream to play for the Knicks, and this was pretty close to that. If Europe were to come up with NBA type salaries (Maybe they do already, I don't know) you could see some superstars pull out their passports and jump ship. Of course, the future of the American economy will play a role too. Plenty to speculate about, plenty to discuss. Thanks to all that have shared their views.

Damn you are pathetic. Seriously, just go masturbate more often instead of polluting the forum with shit like this. Your idiotic initial post has about as much substance & intellect as the porn dialogue you get free passwords to.

here's my suggestion how about we replace all NBA players with chimpanzees. That will cut costs by a staggering amount. My idea will never happen but it merits some discussion.

If you bothered to read this thread, you would see if the league falls into hard times, it may implode and we start losing teams to bankruptcy. Owners have money, and like to earn more. If they lose their shirt, they'll fold the franchise if the market won't let them sell. It's happened to teams before.

Why should I masturbate when I have the most loving wife in the world? Who says this is shit? You do. No one else does. Who is polluting this place? Look in a mirror. If you don't like what people say, tough. We're going to say it anyway. Don't be a troll like 21_Blessings. I'm done with you, you have no credibility here.

Don't be a troll. Chimpanzees obviously would command significantly lower salaries than NBA players. And they would attract a much larger audience of young children. The Hannah Montana crowd would jump all over the chance to watch chimps play basketball. The NBA would do great if they had the attention of the Hanna Montana demographic, would it not?

If you don't want to have a serious discussion about my solution to the NBA's problems, then just take your trollish nonsense elsewhere.

Easy solution, add more teams and make it best of three.
