So I live in the backwoods of nowhere town and have satellite net, and it's HughesNet. Well I only get fucking 350 megs a day to download. And I passed it already so once they get that picture I'll be on a 24 hour ban type thing for violating the "Fair Act Policy".

So what the fuck? I use FF and am trying to figure out what fucking made me go passed 350megs? I haven't downloaded shit, all do is youtube and I don't download porn believe it or not.

Does Firefox have a download tracker or some shit? Cause if youtube is counting against my limit I am fucked.

:bang:bang:bang:bang:bang:bang

Brutalis

I should have fucking known that.

But on the phone they said browsing the internet does not count against me only when I download files and such. So it threw me off.

Yep, Youtube is what is getting you. Even streaming video has to download a temporary cache to store the buffered movie, so a few things on Youtube will probably get you over the 350 limit quick.

Well I need something to track it... if it even exists.

Sigs.

BTW, youtube will go over 350MB quick; video is huge. Say you watch a 3 minute music video on youtube: you've then used about 20-25MB of your bandwidth to watch that.

350MB/day is pretty ridiculous for this day and age. Drop your ISP ASAP.

This is the only ISP that will go out here so I can't switch.

And what's sigs mean?

Yeah, go to your control panel and turn off sigs. Also, stay out of threads that you know are picture intensive like that cat thing that Manny started. THose also cache to your system after download.

Oh oh yeah yeah that's why I never delete my fucking cookies unless I'm in the free period which is 2-5 am and even then .. yeah doesn't help much and you can't let you cookies just add up for weeks and weeks. You could buttt ehh.

What's this I hear about an ATT internet thing I can plug into my laptop? I don't even know what they are called LMAO.

I'm screwed on HughesNet it was a 2 year contract.

So much for getting an ATT wireless usb thingy and just adding that 60 a month unlimited to my ATT cell.

Fuck.

Fuck.

You signed a contract with a 350 MB/day limit?

Brutalis
07-05-2008, 02:26 PM
NO.

My uncle did. We live in the boondocks and that's the only ISP that was available unless it was dialup and ... dialup is dialup so he signed the contract, and told me I had to split the bill with him afterwards, which is 30 bucks a month to me.

SO .. blah. I would feel like an asshole if I copped out on him.

mavsfan4ever
07-05-2008, 02:35 PM
why don't yall split the bill to get out of the contract?

Brutalis

It's his internets toooooo

Browse the forum using the default style (it's a little less data), turn off sigs, pictures and avatars in your control panel. That's all you can do for the forum.

Everything you watch on the web counts against your limit (even e-mails - although the messages themselves are very small, it's the attachments that can be a problem), because your browser, flash player, media player... can't display/show it if it doesn't get/travel to you first.

So, your uncle's usage is included in the 350MB/day limit, too? You are really hosed.

You can't renogiate the contract to increase the limit?

Brutalis
07-05-2008, 04:59 PM
Yeah if we fork over another 40 bucks a month the usage will move up to 700mb a day.

Nay I say nayyy! I've already accepted my defeat. Once it hits midnight the FAP goes into action and will not let up for 24 hours on the dot.

Holy fuck. $60 a month for 350 MB is cockshit. You'd be better off on dialup.

That is insane. And it sounds like they're charging that to people who are least likely to be able to afford it.

A Sprint Wireless account, while probably slower, would only run you $60 a month for unlimited downloads.

Wouldn't surprise me.

I was told the same thing with AT&T and that it's unlimited as well.

Yeah, two people trying to run off a 350 MB/day limit is like trying to feed two tigers a hamburger.

You could fill that quota going through a few threads around this place if you weren't careful.

Yeah, HughesNet is horrible. The cap is ridiculous. You should of have gone with a sprint mobile broadband card. They are pretty fast and are like 60 bucks a month. At first there was no cap on them, but start in a week or two, there will be a 5 GB cap per month.

Then it would average out to less than 350mb a day if it's 5gig a month correct?

Would be a worse option then.

Yeah, like I said, we were gonna go with sprint, but the cap is stupid. We current have verizon as our phone company. They don't offer high speed internet what so ever. They own a good part of wilson county. I'm waiting for this. http://www.stelera.com/

We are right on the border to getting this. We contacted a local retailer, and they said, by October or November, we should have service. Currently all of 775 doesn't have courage. So in a few months, there should be much bigger service range.

Yep...AT&T as always playing follow the leader decided to institute a 5 GB cap like Verizon did.

Sprint shot themselves in the foot doing the same thing too, they're in dire straits financially now and they pissed off alot of customers doing that too.

I just checked. I just signed a 2-year Sprint contract with unlimited MB last month. It still has that listed on my on-line account. I need to see if there's some fine print that says they can change that. :makemyday

Shoogar I have both Sprint EVDO and Verizon.

Verizon WILL Throttle you down to 200 kbps speeds and I know they've done that to me because thats what i'm getting on it now. I went over 20 GB :lol

Sprint I believe we'll be ok on it even if we casually go over it a few GB's a month. We're still on unlimited if we sign up BEFORE July 13 which is when that new cap and TOS goes into effect.

We're grandfathered in as "Unlimited" but I think if you rreally go overboard they'll throttle you too.

So what do yall think my best option is? Go with sprint before the 13 and avoid the new tos, or stick it out alittle longer and go with http://www.stelera.com/ which speeds claim to be really fast and unlimited. I think I would go over the 5gb cap with sprint, but I was reading somewhere that only 1% of their users go over 5gb a month.

N.Y. Johnny

Sprint will have WiMax soon, that is supposed to be pretty good and they've been touting it as your main broadband replacement whereas they're pissy about EVDO and limit that.

They're a telecom so I wouldn't trust those weasels anyways.

I don't know much about Stelera, but I'd tell you THIS.

Maybe try out Sprint EVDO card NOW...sign up for it NOW then if they start shit you can cancel it without ETF because they changed the TOS. You may be able to get out of it with no cost

Verizon's new EVDO policy is very nasty, they'll actually bill you for going over I think if memory serves me correctly. they're really anal about that and started this cap bullshit. They deservedly got sued by New York State for pulling this shit.

spurs_2108
07-06-2008, 11:25 PM
Yeah, so get it by the 13th while the cap and all that is not in place. Then If they claim I go over this "cap" I complain and say that there wasn't a cap in my contract and if they still want to bitch about how much I use, cancel and get ETF cause they screwed up the TOS? Sounds good, cause I can't wait till Oct.

Well, I use the Sprint broadband mostly for business travel, and only occasionally will I be over 5 GB/month, so I guess I'm good.

Looks interesting, but it's not clear what the difference is between the different plans (residential/business/enhanced/premier). Are they capped? Also, their coverage area right now is just Floresville/Poth, and you always wonder how reliable they are going to be on expansion.

On the other hand, the Sprint broadband will give you only access for one computer, while Stelera promises that you can set up a wireless hub for multiple computers in your house.

Yeah a few GB over the cap you'll be ok...I had done with Verizon 6 to 8 gigs then two months in a row I did 17GB and 20GB they throttled it.

Also if you use one tower at a time or the same place then they'll catch you. I made that mistake with the Verizon. I set up a EVDO Router for a network here at home and it went over, plus my stupid ass neighbor's kids I think leeched off me too. Thats at home here off of the same tower, before I was mobile and using it all over and different towers.

1gb = 1024mb (right?)
5gb = 5120mb
5120mb divided by 30 days in a month = 170.67mb per day

So if my math is correct I am given 10.25gb a month. That's 350mb a day, times 30 days in a month, divided by 1024mb aka 1gb.

So, 5gb a month to me is insane. Now I feel like I don't have it so bad seeing what you guys get. And I don't understand how I still go over so easily...

It's not quite that simple. You get 350 megs a day, but that doesn't mean you'll get to use 10 GB a month.

Theoretically, somebody with the 5 GB/month could do nothing for three weeks, then use up the whole thing in a few days. On the other hand, you don't get to roll over your daily 350 MB--if you don't use it, it's gone.

Unless, you cap > 50% of the time, the 350 MB/day cap equates to being closer to 5 GB/month than 10.

Damn, I hope every ISP doesn't start capping... 350MB is one episode of a TV show I missed... One time I downloaded a bunch of DVD .ISOs (like 50) in one day and those were almost 5GB each.

That's stupid... 350mb is 1/1000th of ONE of my hard drives...
