IMO:
1). Remain a Championship Contender during the remainder of Tim Duncan's contract?
- Odd calendar year coming up. That's been good for Spurs' fans.
- Since Spurs did not win NBA title this year, no adverse rule changes are expected to be imposed by the league next year.
- Big Three must stay healthy. As good as Pop's minute management was throughout the season, the Spurs need a reliable 3rd/4th scorer to take the offensive load off of the Spurs' triumvirate.
- Dependent on how well the following objectives are met.
2). Draft backup PG?
-Draft George Hill - Check
3). Address our need for an athletic 2/3 with MLE or LLE?
- Pending through FA scramble - but Corey Maggette would be a much better acquisition than anyone could have hoped for or expected from the Spurs' FO.
- Other options J.R. Smith, K. Azuibuke, Matt Barnes, Josh Childress, M. Pietrus
4). Get younger?
- Bring up Mahinmi from Toros next season - Check
- Draft others, evaluate during summer league, place on Toros for call ups during early part of NBA season (Gist, Hairston) - Check
- Let Horry, Finley and Stoudamire leave - Check (It was a good ride, Spurs fans are appreciative of the memories, but so long).
5). Retain a 3pt marksman?
- Pending (essential to our offensive schemes that enable Duncan to do his thing in the post, this objective has eluded most Spurs fans).
- Re-sign Brent Barry (Barry's +/- during the playoffs this year can not be overlooked - he's finally figured out his role). Of the two available options (Finley and Barry), Barry is more valuable because of his ability to create for others.
- Retain Chip Engelland's services (Don't let the Suns steal one of our key 'Assistant' cogs).
- Have Tony continue developing a consistent 3 point shot.
- Hope that Hill can have an impact from beyond the NBA 3pt line.
6). Beef up front line with MLE or LLE?
- Retain Kurt Thomas, then grab a serviceable big-man from the market - perhaps Najera, Posey or Javtokas?
7). Bowen's elusive replacement?
- Keep developing Udoka. He will be much better next year with one full season under his belt.
- Hope that Gist or Hairston can one day fill that role as well.
- Nabbing Posey from the Celtics as a SF/small-ball PF combo could also help meet this objective.
8). Don't screw up the 2010 plan?
- Still on track. Though trading Bonner for an All-Star is still a possibility... I mean if the Lakers can pull it off without drawing suspicion from the FBI/or Stern's office... one can dream.
- Essential so that the Spurs are as much of a contender in in 2012 as they will be next season - see No. 1 above.
