He's also currently playing for the Pacers in the Orlando Summer League if you wanna check him out.

I like Powell and Adeleke. Green is versatile but hasn't been playing well in Orlando SL.

None of the free agents here are going to make the team.

Dan Nwaelele is the name that stands out to me. Supposedly the Spurs really thought he had a shot to make their team last year before the Air Force didn't allow him to play. We'll see if he can regain that magic.

Amara Sy is that French cat who threw down a monstrous dunk on Elson during a preseason game a couple years ago. Kid is pretty damn athletic. Not much of a basketball player the last time I saw him.

I think it's a pretty solid roster. The one thing I'm a bit skeptical about is all the talent. Hopefully the Spurs actually give their rookies (and Mahinmi) a lot of time and don't try to make it even. Then again, with the lack of rest, that could be difficult to do.

Solid yet unspectacular summer league roster. It's comparable to if the Spurs spent 75% of their MLE on a player such as Roger Mason. Oh wait . . .

ChumpDumper
07-09-2008, 10:07 PM
Yeah, I don't see any of the free agents unseating the draft picks though there is a decent amount of talent there. I want the draftees and Ian to be force fed in both leagues. The others can impress if they play defense and find the right spots on offense.

Even if Spurs will play 8 games in 9 days, that's a lot.
Theres isn't "big names" in this roster. I wonder if it's because Spurs struggle to attract these players in their SL team or if it's because they want that Mahinmi and Spurs' drafted players are their SL teams main weapons.

No Sanikidze is quite a surprise. I hope for him that he isn't again injured.

The coaching staff looks very good. Budenholzer and not Newman is a great choice. Having Snyder there will also help out a lot, since he probably knows the most about Mahinmi's game of the whole staff.

timvp

The thing I don't like about the roster is that there aren't any centers on the team. The starting lineup should be:

C - 7 Footer
PF - Mahinmi
SF - Gist
SG - Hairston
PG - Hill

Mahinmi is going to have to play next to an interior big on the Spurs. Gist will likely make or not make the team depending on whether he can transition to small forward. Hairston has the most value to the team as a shooting guard.

The only way to keep the optimal lineup is to start Fuqua at center ... but he's not really good enough for summer league level. I'm going to guess we'll either see this starting lineup:

C Mahinmi
PF Gist
SF Hairston
SG Nwaelele
PG Hill

or we'll see the main four players start most of the games and then rotate in the fifth starter and shift accordingly.

I really do think the Spurs are toying with the idea of using Gist (if he shows well in SL and camp) as their "combination 4" to defend the longer, mobile players such as Dirk Nowitzki, and then still allow the Spurs to play small on offense.

Adeleke put some good stats in Turkey this year (14 ppg and 11.4 rpg).

How good was the competition in Turkey that he played against? At 6-9 & 245lb he has ok size. He played for a small school and went undrafted. Was a standout at the Orlondo Camp in 2006. Played a little in Israel. Supposedly has a bit of an outside shot now. The interesting thing about him is that going all the way back to HS he has been an outstanding rebounder.

Edit: Unless he had a growth spurt after his Orlando Draft measurements, he is actually 6'6.5" w/ 8'.8" standing reach. His 30" vert isnt that great either. On the plus side he is really strong, getting 26 on the bench press.

Here's the official press release with the roster...

28 Ian Mahinmi F/C 6-11 245 11/05/86 France 1

Has Ian bulked up? Wasn't the guy like 225 when we drafted him?

Here's a photo of the three drafted rookies on the summer league team from the July 11th Silver Stars game.

The verdict?

Hairston - M&Ms

Hill - Nachos

Gist - Nachos

Who still eats plain M&Ms? Hairston just lost some points on that decision.

No problem. I don't think we're supposed to post pics with the watermarks. Something about copyrights.

Yahoo...Silver Stars Photos. :)
Most, not all, of Getty's pics will end up out there somewhere.

Hairston really has lost a lot of weight.

And just think how much he'd have lost if he'd cut out the M&M's.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that 3% body fat Hill didn't end up eating all those nachos.

I see maybe two guys in that list that will make solid pros.

You do not think Beas will pan out?

:lol your probly right, but alot of thin athletic guys just have a fast metabolism and remain thin regardless of what they eat.

Alot of skinny guys eat alot more than big guys yet they cant put weight on. Although George Hill just looks like he doesnt eat

The nachos are all part of a plan to acculturate these rookies to S. Texas and our great TexMex food.

Once addicted, they will be unable to play elsewhere because they'll need their weekly/daily fix.

I'm off. Hopefully the games won't be the waste of money they were last summer. I don't think we'll be pumping up any one player's trade value again, but one never knows. :pctoss

Roger Powell is a good guy. Very Spur-like off the court.
If that's Roger Powell, Jr., which I think it is, my dad went to college with his dad.

There was a one-on-one streetball style tournament a couple of years ago on MTV, does anyone know if Sy is the French kid that won it?

IIRC it was called "Battlegrounds."

Yes it was the worldwide street ball tournament. It end up in France and he win "world street ball title". He play in Greek League with AEK Athens. "World street ball champion" lost "village ball" game against Spanoulis 21-5.:lol
